So, what's the secret to memory?

Postby semper76 » Tue Jun 26, 2007 3:24 pm

When shopping for RAM, what do you need to know to begin? Do you need to have a CPU, GPU and Mobo selected?

Say, for the sake of argument, I was looking to run a AMD 6000+ 3.0 w/ an 8800 GTX 768, on an ASUS M2N-E Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 Ultra MCP.

What type of memory would I want to look for, or what specifics do I want to shop for? I want to start with 2gig and go from there.

How does the relationship between the CPU and RAM, GPU and RAM work?

Thanks!

what you need to look for is how good the company is, and will it fit and be supported by your motherboard and CPU, and if it is in your price range, the GPU is not a factor whatsoever. in the newer boards the memory is usually gonna be 240 pin DDR2- also you want RAM as fast, or faster than your CPU(im not really sure how easy that would be for the AMD 6000 and Intel quad cores)

If you're set on the M2N-E, make sure the memory's rated voltage is 1.95V or lower.

Well I'm probably the wrong person to ask as my memory never seems to work right. I really can't remember anything...Oh wait, you meant COMPUTER memory 8-[

Well, I've never really had a problem with my SuperTalent (some of which I won right here at LR!) and I also use it in an ASUS (see sig) but like skierkid said, get a good brand and before deciding on a certain type, read MANY different reviews (especially those on this wonderful site :P).
