System Administrator Appreciation Day

Postby Apoptosis on Mon Jul 23, 2007 6:45 pm

Did you guys know that July 27th is System Administrator Appreciation Day?

I didn't, but it seems that companies like Intel are taking notice and have made a new site...

http://www.itgetseasier.com

This site has some humorous videos by Christopher Guest that are developed for the IT guy/gal. But remember Intel is all about marketing, so expect some plugs...
Hard Soft Video Quick Facts:
Produced, directed and written by Christopher Guest:
Guest writing/directing and acting credits include:

This is Spinal Tap
Waiting for Guffman
Best in Show
A Mighty Wind
The Big Picture
For Your Consideration
Almost Heros

If you are wondering why there is a random jockey in one of the videos – it’s trademark Guest. He tries to work in Jockeys, miniature horses and midgets into all of his work. In this case it’s supposed to perpetuate the chaos that IT thinks end users are participating in on a daily basis, but it’s really just a subtle nod to Christopher Guest.

Soft Rock talent:

Dan Finnerty from the Dan Band (popular cover band). Also played the wedding singer in Old School and the Bar Mitzvah singer in Startsky and Hutch.

Hard Rock talent:

Rob Giles. Up and coming musician. Just released a CD called Rob Giles – This is all in your mind. Doesn’t have the stardom of Dan Finnerty yet, but he was perfect for the role and had worked with CJ (the composer) before.

Both Songs Have IT inside jokes and stories throughout:

PEBKAC (Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair) - IT name for dumb end users

Patch & Pray – When IT sends out a new upgrade or patch they are dependent on the end user to except it. In many cases they don’t. So they call it Patch & Pray. vPro/cPro is supposed to cure all that.

Coffee cup in the CD tray – IT urban legend that some end users are so dumb they use the CD trey as a coffee cup holder.

Outdated OS, trouble tickets and system threats – daily nucence IT has to deal with because of PEBKAC moments

Manage with our fingers, no longer with feet – have to spend time going desk to desk to fix problems. With vPro/cPro, IT can manage it all from their console.

Trying to send Melissa home and riding the Trojan horse goodbye – references to famous computer viruses that caused IT nightmares.

Happy sys admins day. So what are you going to do to commemorate the event?
I believe in chaos. If anything wasn't possible, nothing would have happened.

Fixing an 18 year old dot band printer (impact printer) and trying to squeeze 6k out of the vp to buy a new one to replace it :)

Just another day in paradise
