X Box 360 ring of death

my friend just gave me his old xbox and it has the ring of death. i heard that there was a few "fixes" to this does anyone know wat they are? i heard something bout raping it in a towel or some thing like that?

uhh, did you mean to say raping the 360 in a towel or wrapping? i haven't heard of any way to rape a game console, hmmm.........

i've seen people beating the crap out of the red ring'ed 360's on youtube, then working fine lol.

MS now has 3 year warrantees on their 360s... you could always send it back.

Most people believe that the RROD stems from the console getting too hot. Specifically the graphics chip. Some technical types have theorised that it gets so hot the solder starts to partially melt (as it is a dual metal based solder only part of it melts), and it allows the GPU to bow out of shape and miss contact with the mainboard. (or something).

The idea behind the towel trick is that the unit gets so hot that the solder melts again, and if you are lucky it reseals the board and GPU back together, if only temporarily till it does it again.

But yeah, the best thing is to send it back.

I remember hearing that some people had rigged their XBox 360's up to a water cooler in order to prevent this issue from occurring. Does anyone know who decided to try this out and how successful it actually turned out to be?

Most likely Ben Heck (maker of the 360 and wii laptops, sixaxis 360 controller, etc.) sounds like something he'd do, i would assume that whoever did would have to put the mainboard, optical drive, etc. in another case, because the 360 doesn't have much room in the case as is, let alone having tubes running through it and pushing against the mainboard.

Maybe he just tightly wrapped the tubes around the case and hoped that, come time to turn the beast off, he would be able to get to the power button

Well, M$'s warranty covers ALL 360's released since launch until this November that get the RROD, so basically you got yourself a brand new 360 for FREE . Just send it back to M$ and they will send you another 360 (which may or may not be new, but hey it's better than nothing). I've had a few friends do this, and the turnaround is about 2 weeks.

My Xbox 360 just got the "Ring of Death" (3 red lights). I was told you should try unplugging in it completely from its power souce for 30 minutes. Sometimes it will work after that It didn't work for me I called 18004myxbox. If they ask you what you did about the problem tell them you tried unplugging it completely and it didn't work. This will save you several minutes on the phone. Basicaly they will send you a box with prepaid shipping. They will tell you it will take about 3 to 4 weeks once they receive it.

Unplug everything. All wires, controlers, especialy the hard drive. The only thing you send to them is the Xbox360 stripped of everything. It took about 6 days for the box to arrive. I sent it to Microsoft on the 18th of this month. I called MS two days ago and got a recording telling me my console has been fixed and sent back to me. I don't have it yet so they must have just sent it.

Mine came back in about 3 weeks. There was rumours at one point that systems were taking up to 6 weeks to come back. Its been fine ever since. Although I do know someone that is on his 9th repair.
