NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2 Power Supply Requirements

If you are wanting to get a GeForce 9800 GX2 then make sure you have the right power supply. The minimum recommend PSU for the NVIDA GeForce 9800 GX2 is 580 watts. For two GeForce 9800 GX2 cards, NVIDIA recommends a minimum PSU of 850 watts. You should use a higher rated power supply if your system has power hungry CPUs, hard drives and other devices. And in case you were wondering the GeForce 9800 GX2 requires both a 6-in and 8-pin PCI-E power connector for proper operation. NVIDIA also sent LR notice that most will have 8-pin plug-in issues (like we do) as the 8-pin connector hits the outside housing of the GeForce 9800 GX2. NVIDIA of course blaims this on the PSU manufacturers for not following PCI-E specification. Here is exactly what NVIDIA says about the connector issue.

Some 8-pin PCI-E connectors may have trouble fitting into the socket on the GeForce 9800 GX2. We designed our socket to specification but unfortunately some PSU manufacturers did not. With a bit more push, most of these plugs will fit. The Tagan power supply that some of you have may have a tight fit, but should work fine.

Two things are being done to help alleviate this issue. First, board vendors will be making available adapters to help the oversized plugs work with the GeForce 9800 GX2. Second, PSU manufacturers are updating their designs to follow PCI-E specification. Please contact your board vendor or PSU vendor for further details.

Below is a list of power supplies that NVIDIA has tested and found to work well with the GeForce 9800 GX2. Note that this list is not exhaustive. The vast majority of PSUs will work fine with the GeForce 9800 GX2. Legit Reviews has been using a Corsair HX620W power supply with the GeForce 9800 GX2 and found no issues with this power supply with a single GeForce 9800 GX2.
