OCing

Postby Merlin » Sun Apr 06, 2008 8:20 pm

I have this card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130318 I was wondering if any of you have this same card and have OCed it? Without removing the stock heat solution in favor of after market what can I realistically do with it?

I have a PNY 8800GT stock and to be stable on the factory cooler I can do about 661 core, 1652 shader, and 971 memory.

If i go more than that it get s a bits bumpy ;) now I also set the fan profiles so the fan spins at 60% even when it is 43C and it will still spin up to 100% sometimes when playing a game! I thought the cooler would be better tahn that, but I believe that is why I cant go higher for the OC also. Raise each setting independently - gpu first till it goes crazy, then back it down a couple mhz ( I back it down 5mhz, but other opinions will vary ). then do the memory the same way I let the shader locked to the gpu and dont bother setting the rating any higher than the same ratio of the gpu.

Mike

It is a pain in the ass and it takes time, but I can run a couple settings higher in Company of Heroes at 1600X1200 than I could at stock speeds!

i can overclock mine, but i have to put the fan up high for it to be stable and IMO the stock fan is really really loud

Those heat solutions that vent the air to the outside of the case....would a low end one of those be better for overall system temps then a stock solution?? How would it do for strictly the GPU?? and lastly what about those cheapo PCI slot coolers that mount under the GPU to suck the warm air away from it and blow it outside the case?? I am running my GPU at 650 mhz and 50'+ at load. Thinking moving the warm air away faster would drop temps on the GPU a little for cheap.

Dunno, never used any of those :(

I would just get a better GPU fan. 50C at load is pretty darn good in my book! I run 50 at stock speeds! Heck right now I an running 61 for some reason

Mike

that 61 isnt even overclocked - *sigh* Guess I need to find a better cooler before i kill this 8800GT even at stock :(

It sort of bites since now I could get a 8800GTS with the heatsink the exhausts outside the case for the same price as I paid for this GT that doesn't.
GPU-Z does tell me this card is a G92 GPU ( isnt the G92 supposed to be on GTS and GTX only??)

Oh well. I did just save tons of money on car insurance!!

The GTX has the G80, and the GT512, and GTS512 have the G92. And yes, the 8800GTS512 has a HSF that works very well with fan speed of 40% or higher.
