to much memory?

Postby XstollieX » Tue Apr 15, 2008 9:26 am

Quick question. I built my system with 4 gb of ram to run vista. I'm REALLY REALLY not impressed with vista so i switched back to xp pro (much happier now). Will the 2x2gb of ram affect (in a negative way) the performance since only 3 gb is recognized?

I believe you will only be able to use the visible 3 gigs. Windows 32bit cannot utilize more than 3.2 (or however much) ram.

I have the same memory configuration and my computer sees 3.5Gb. You should not have any problems or issues. In fact, for those who insist on 4Gb ram, I recommend 2gx2 over 1gx4 any day.

The extra memory just wont be used... It will not impact performance or stability at all. The only negative to it is the fact you are giving it power (volts) and it's not being used. That's it to be honest.

isn't the unused memory used for graphics texture memory or "shared system memory"?

well the reason why i ask is because i have a 256MB (dedicated) 2600XT, and i used to have 2GBs-o-RAM and ~700MBs-o-texture memory... after adding another 2(2x1GB)GBs of RAM, the texture memory went up to 1,523MBs of texture memory.

For Windows Vista to use 4 GB of memory on a computer that has 4 GB of memory installed, the computer must meet the following requirements

1st The chipset must support at least 8 GB of address space.

2nd The CPU must support the x64 instruction set.

3rd The BIOS must support the memory remapping feature. The memory remapping feature allows for the segment of system memory that was previously overwritten by the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) configuration space to be remapped above the 4 GB address line. This feature must be enabled in the BIOS configuration utility on the computer.

4th An x64 (64-bit) version of Windows Vista must be used.
