Can this motherboard support higher-end CPU's?

Hey what's up, new to forums, but in need of some good help. Quick rundown of my computer = 3072 MB, 8800 GT(512 MB), Asus MOBO and a P4 630 - Socket 775 LGA 3.00GHZ CPU. In more detail, I have an AsusTeK P5ND2-SLI Motherboard, nForce4 SLI Intel Edition chip set and i'm wondering if this motherboard can support a decent CPU? As mentioned, I currently have a Intel Pent 4 630 , Package : Socket 775 LGA. This CPU has done fine for me so far, but I would like to upgrade and am wondering what's a good upgrade option with that MOBO? Ok. From a quick look at this from here

It can support to some extent a Dual core CPU but from what they say definately it can only take pentium D's, and teh 65nm architecture. If you apry to teh gods you MIGHT get lucky and a Core 2 Duo will work but nothing out of the E8*** range will work. so aim for the E4*** or the E6*** if you are going to take the slight chance that C2D will work on the board.

But i sadly make to guarantees that they will work.

i doubt it would even work with the c2d....you can get a higher end pentium but it wouldn't be worth it with today's cpu's..I dont even think nforce 4 supports C2D(i dont know that for sure tho)..i hope that Wolfdale would work for your wallet's sake..But even if it did work or was supported..a bios updated for that board would probably be a must..Honestly for as much as that board costs now..you can get a better mobo and a cpu that would be the same cost as what you got now if not less..IMO you're better off getting a new motherboard and cpu..but that's if you're looking for a huge difference in performance..though maybe irrelevant, i did notice that there's "newer"(so to say) Pentiums..They MIGHT work, but those ones are actually based off the C2D core and might not work either..Like Kappage said..give it a shot...no guarantees

Your board officially doesn't support anything better than a dual core pentium D (which isn't great compared to the newer C2Ds).

I wouldn't want to risk spending money on something that more than likely won't work. From Pentium 4's (which includes Pentium D's) to the core 2 duo lineup, the C2Ds required some changes to the way the motherboard regulates power to the CPU compared to the pentium 4. Older socket 775 motherboard's therefore cannot support the new processors.

So all this means is that you need to get a new motherboard if you want the best performance from a new CPU.

Ahh, gotcha, thank you. I figured the mobo was outdate, but just making sure .. As of now i'm planning on this bundle -- http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... VIEWS#tabs -- Which from my research is a pretty good board with a pretty good CPU. What do you guys think? Good deal? It would be a huge upgrade for me atm.

LR's review of that motherboard would be a good place to catch up on that board, i'd say its a good deal if you want a quad core
