That said, this is exactly why I wish these companies didn't get tied to a specific GPU vendor. I would've waited for an EVGA or XfX 4870 because in dealing with those companies I just have a better "feel" for the support I will receive. The cards themselves (especially when new releases are all just reference designs with different stickers and packaging) don't vary much so the company support is critical.
I don't think we will see VisionTek, Powercolor, Diamond, or HIS doing something like this (not that those companies are bad, Visiontek has a lifetime warranty and all) and it should be a hint to AMD to look at their reseller channels a bit. When I was into ATI before I still liked the Nvidia resellers better and usually bought the actual ATI card but that's not happening anymore

One thing to note, while Apple did this with the iPhone it was only after a lot of complaining from those who waited in line to buy one and felt ripped off. I haven't seen a large amount of complaining about the GTX260/280 drops but these companies did it anyways, loyalty is earned
