Distributed Computing?

Postby tekgek » Mon Jan 12, 2009 9:00 pm

Hey, guys,

Well, my parents have been holding on to some old machines (2, to be exact), and I am thinking about building a cluster. I will be running one control machine, my desktop, and 4 machines that are grunts. I would like to know whether there is a general purpose cluster program that will let me use the cluster to accomplish any task (mainly rendering After Effects files), and some other things, like running Call of Duty 4 and cpu-intensive apps in general. Any idea on the software?

Thanks,
Tekgek

The only way I know of setting up clusters is through linux (or macs).

So you'd have to be running linux on all of them which would mean you can't run after effects etc.

I'm not sure how the cluster would help you with gaming, as even if something like that did work, the network latencies would make it unplayable.

Ya, the only cluster I've made was with ClusterKnoppix back in college. The site is still live, but hasn't been updated in over 4 years. :(

thanks. I did some searching myself and found that drqueue can be downloaded for windows, and that i might be able to find something that will help me with video transcoding (I looked on sourceforge). I will definitely try clusterknoppix for my more linux-oriented stuff.

Thanks,
