Favortie places for online storage?

Postby Sporg » Fri Aug 07, 2009 8:11 am

I'm doing some support work for a buddy of mine who is the top dog of a fairly small non-profit. We had a conversation the other day about online storage. I have to admit that I'm a bit green when it comes to this. So have any of you guys used online storage, if so, which service are you using.

To get an idea of scope, the office has approximately 17 folks, but only a handful really would need to use a service like this. Storage needs would require between 50GB and 75GB (I still need to perform an audit, but I think they're around 55GB at the moment).

I've read a few articles and visited a few sites, but want to hear from folks who are already using services like this.

Same here, although if they need to have secure user-only files, I don't know how Dropbox will handle it, unless each one of them creates an individual account.

Dropbox is very good at keeping all copies of your files in sync whether you have 2 computers or 20. However, I'm not sure how suitable it might be for a corporate environment with potentially sensitive data. They're working on group accounts, but I'm not sure when the implementation might be...

Well NAS would be nice for an on-site solution. Being that they are a non-profit there isn't a lot of cash to go around. The idea of an online solution for their more critical data gives them some redundancy. Currently they all use share drives with user folders for storage. I think once a week one of the main folks does some sort of backup. It's a small setup and I'll probably end up restructuring quite a few things that they're doing. Like I posted above though, they don't have a ton of stuff that needs to be backed up, which is also why I would think that a NAS setup would be overkill right now.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'll look into dropbox. Anyone else who has suggestions feel free to jump in. This isn't something that has to be done tomorrow, so I have some time to come up with a good solution that will meet their needs.

I remember looking into this before:

For my usage, though, Dropbox was just easier.

Addendum:
Apparently, they also have a service for workgroups. This might be something worth looking into.
