The Apple iMAC G5 Case Cooling Mod

Although the sleek all-in-one design on the Apple iMac G5 is pretty on the eyes many consumers are seeing 170+ Degrees Fahrenheit CPU temperatures and systems locking under load. Today LR posts up the thoughts of one of our readers and what he did to cool his iMac G5 down to keep it from locking up.

To fix the heat issue I tapped into the existing ducting just under the plastic and mounted a Papst 120mm fan with a flow rating of 50 cfm to help solve the problem. Since the fan is externally mounted I chose to power it by an external adapter. After marking the spot I want to install the fan I drill the plastic very carefully, like a bowling ball almost, but I use a hole-saw chucked in a drill press.

I have 2x of them (ultra low noise) on my dual Radiator
@ 7v i cannot hear then at all

Apple goes for looks too much IMO. As you can tell from this review, they could use some better cooling

Ahh but now some new noise has creeped in

I needed a new PSU for my second pc, Instead of buying a "standard" 450W psu, I got the powerstream 600W and swapped PSU's
My neopower runs my file server
I done this as will need the psu for next upgrade (SLI or Crossfire!)

The only prob is the noise! The Powerstream makes too much noise!
I'll have to live with it as... Well it's a powerstream (can't get much better)

Most people would say that psu is quiet!,, not when your looking for a SILENT pc!

If your going in this direction, just be warned the psu makes noise!
I have seen your mod post - I'd have the blowhole sucking air out, not in!

The neopower is extreamley quiet! Building a quiet pc can get very expensive! I first tried getting zalman HSF's and trying to quiet down the pc. This was never good enough.. I eventually went with H2O, with a single 120m rad. Then I modded my x800pro to xt - this increased the cards temps too high and the fan was always @ 100% --> I then had to watercool the card.. then tmps were too high... buy a new dual 120mm rad.. (more money)

The moral of the story - Do your research first or else!

Yeah, I had an Antec TruePower 430w PSU and it was prettymuch dead silent (for sale in the Trader section). They definately did a nice job there.

I upgraded to a Fortron 500w Blue Storm when I went s939 and it has a single 120mm fan in the bottom and it is also prettymuch silent.
I've also heard very good things about the new ATX 12v 2.0 Seasonic PSU's but are a little more expensive than the Fortron. For price:performance, I just couldn't turn down the Blue Storm (got it for $78 shipped)!

I actually just had to replace a blue storm psu as was making way too noise. My antec case has space above the psu, heat just builds up around there and as the psu fan is temp controlled....

I sold that psu It's had good voltage rails tough (never had a prob with it!)

I got mine for only €30 (sold it for €60!)

The guy in the shop didn't have any idea how much it was worth as only new model

I found the true power psu's good "older generation" power supplies
They should be good for the newer ATX/BTX standards

Problem i find is they are too loud!!

When I mean i want quiet --> I MEAN QUIET inaudable!
