So I've played around with this file in the past, and i'm aware of the dangers of modifying this file, but what i'm really curious about is: can i steal this file from my friend's 32-bit Windows Seven and replace it (after backing up, of course) with my dll on 32-bit Windows Vista???

64 to 32-bit seemed like an obvious no-no, but how different are the 32-bit systems really? all i really want is Seven's pretty new startup and icons.

I'm also aware of the loads of applications that will change the startup files themselves (such as startdock's blahblahblah). So 50 points to whoever knows the answer :)

Ahh Windows Startup Screen. No you can't, completely different under workings from Win7 to Vista.
