Opera slashes power usage with new server parks

Opera to change out Opera Mini servers and reduce carbon footprint

Oslo , Norway– June 24, 2010

With the transition to a new generation of servers, Opera Software expects to increase performance by one third, while slashing power consumption by more than 35 percent.

Following the unveiling of a new Icelandic data center, with far less energy waste and more environmentally-friendly power, Opera now reduces power usage even further. By exchanging the current data server parks providing the Opera Mini and Opera Turbo services for more than 120 million active Opera users worldwide, Opera seeks to reduce environmental strains and ease management of the server parks.

With six server parks located all over the world, management of machines and software can now be centralized for easier access to maintenance. Opera has chosen Dell to deliver the hardware solutions for every data center it operates. In addition to the newly opened Icelandic data center, Opera runs data centers in Norway, Poland, Korea, China and the United States. By standardizing on one hardware supplier for server hardware, Opera expects to save on human resources and utility expenses.

At Opera, Rikard Gillemyr EVP of Engineering looks forward to offering the 120 million Opera users the best in hardware. “Users of Opera browsers expect the world’s fastest browsing experience across devices, platforms or operating systems. In order to continue to successfully deliver this level of service, we rely on our IT infrastructure to support our business by providing top performance and reliability.”

Co-founder Jon von Tetzchner emphasizes the importance of respecting the environment while offering the best possible solutions to the end users: “Opera Mini is the world’s largest mobile browser and growing rapidly. To keep up with growth while maintaining a low overhead on resources, having the optimal configuration of hardware is essential.”

“Opera is poised for tremendous growth over the coming years, and working with Opera demonstrates Dell’s ability to deliver open, capable and affordable solutions in support of our customer’s business objectives.” says Stephen Murdoch, VP & GM of Large Enterprise, EMEA, Dell.
