I noticed this week that Facebook has activated the 'promote' feature on our sites Facebook fan page. I have heard about this feature for weeks and thought it was crap because your posts used to go out to everyone and only in the past year did that change. Now to get everyone to see your posts you have to pay for what used to be free. I thought it would be a buck or two per post, but when I looked at pricing today I was in for a shock.
Our Facebook page has 5,000 fans and to reach half of them Facebook wants $5 and to reach all of them they want $10 per post. This is for a post that has a link to our review. This breaks down to about $2 CPM in terms of advertising and is much higher than I expected. If I was to promote all of our reviews and contests each month it would cost ~$240 per month or $2880 per year.
I believe that images and videos are more costly.
I looked around online and found out that the rate jumps up with how many fans you have. For example the Austin TV station KVUE has 30,000 fans and for them to promote a post they can only go up to 11,000 followers and it costs them $100. That is a CPM rate of like $18 and insane.
Right now it looks like only 10% of your followers will see your Facebook activity if you don't pay to promote it.
