What is a Windows Vista Capable PC?

A new PC that carries the Windows Vista Capable PC logo can run Windows Vista. All editions of Windows Vista will deliver core experiences such as innovations in organizing and finding information, security, and reliability. All Windows Vista Capable PCs will run these core experiences at a minimum. Some features available in the premium editions of Windows Vista—like the new Windows Aero user experience—may require advanced or additional hardware.

A Windows Vista Capable PC includes at least:

* A modern processor (at least 800MHz1).
* 512 MB of system memory.
* A graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable.

Windows Vista Premium Ready PCs
To get an even better Windows Vista experience, including the Windows Aero user experience, ask for a Capable PC that is designated Premium Ready, or choose a PC that meets or exceeds the Premium Ready requirements described below. Features available in specific premium editions of Windows Vista, such as the ability to watch and record live TV, may require additional hardware.

A Windows Vista Premium Ready PC includes at least:

* 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor1.
* 1 GB of system memory.
* A graphics processor that runs Windows Aero2.
* 128 MB of graphics memory.
* 40 GB of hard drive capacity with 15 GB free space.
* DVD-ROM Drive3.
* Audio output capability.
* Internet access capability.

Windows Vista Beta 2 and Windows Server “Longhorn” Beta 2 are available to developers and IT professionals with MSDN and TechNet Plus subscriptions. In the coming weeks, Microsoft will start the Windows Vista Customer Preview Program (CPP) for developers and IT professionals who are not a part of one of those programs to obtain Windows Vista Beta 2 and begin their own testing. Ha-ha! I just upgraded this year all of my computers to WindowsXP from running Windows 98se for the past 8 years. :mrgreen:

The way I figure, by 2014+, I'll be ready. :rolleyes:

I'm not in any big hurry to make the leap. Don't see a big benifit to doing so. Sure, it may be pretty, but it's just more bloat to rob FPS.

I'm now ready with my new laptop.... but I refuse to upgrade to Vista as it is a very worthless upgrade. There isn't much new about it like they promised... just some fancy graphics.

I'll see if I like it or not. Still content with Win 2K unless Vista can outperform it and has some features I like.

XP outperforms Win2K in startup time. But all my applications load faster and it uses less system resources, to my knowledge. Plus my computer is on almost all the time so I don't really care about an extra few minutes for startup.

I'm sure Vista will be a security blunder the first year at least. So I'll wait that out too.

Currently ready but I'd like to upgrade before I buy it.

Come to think of it, the collage I attend was offering free software to students last semester which included a copy of XP home edition. I'll have to check into that when Vista comes out...free is always nice.

I am ready but not sure if I will jump on the Vista band wagon right away. They have moved alot of stuff around. Settings that used to take just a few seconds to change now takes several minutes because you have to try and find where they moved it too....

I don't see any reason in paying more than once for Windows software. And we all pay for their software more than once.

Consider this, most of the public computers you use have Windows that has been purchased indirectly with your money. The computers at the libraries at my University, for example. Part of my fees gets allocated to technology which is more than just a service cost but an upgrading and maintenance cost. Although universities get a discount on software bundles, part of the money for it comes out of my pocket.

When someone asks me why I use pirated software, sometimes my response is that this is just a copy of a cd that I've already paid for, in one way or another.

Any word on the relaese of Vista beta 2? My name is in the hat to get it, but have been playing the waiting game. Just for my own curiousity, when it comes to beta's such as Vista, what happens when the testing is over? Do you get to keep the beta or does it die on you?
