Intel Officially Announces Quad-Core Processors

During the opening keynote speach Intel CEO Paul Otellini discussed in some detail the company’s plan for delivering the industry’s first quad core processors for PCs and high-volume servers. The first processor, targeted at gamers and content creators, will be shipped in November and be called the Intel Core 2 Extreme quad-core processor.

I AM an AMD guy but at the same time I realize that C2D is superior to current gen Athlons. I just gotta know why Intel is rushing into quad-core, I mean its just 2 C2Ds on one chip! didnt they learn their lesson from the DC P4's? Yeah its gonna further beat the pants off of AMD's current offerings but what if AMD takes a page from their book and in 6 months puts 2 native quad-core Barcelonas on a single chip? whats Intel gonna counter with then? It seems like a rushed product that they did simply to say they did it first. I seriously think their shooting themselves in the foot with this. I see AMD taking the lead performance wise in the later half of this new generation.

AMD would need to switch to 45nm or even 32nm to be able to fit two Barcelona cores in a skt AM2 chip.............And that aint gonna happen anytime soon!

Intel are releasing this because they can.....simple! They will release it as a EE chip and now alot more people will consider paying the extra premium for the EE badge!

it just seems like they would be better off long term developing a native quad core architecture rather then competing with 2 dual core procs on one chip. im not starting an arguement here you Intel guys can bleieve whatever you want. Im just stating my opinion. And to further prove my point I submit to you:

I agree with Ken... Intel is just doing this because they can... there's probably not much more production costs, minimal design costs, and they can get it out the door quick. Just because they are doing this doesn't mean they aren't spending the necessary amount of time to research and design a native quad-core chip.

Ever have a bully big brother that was much taller than you? Picture Intel holding a candy bar just out of AMD's reach, then just when AMD is about to jump for it, Intel raises the bar.

Since I'm indifferent to Intel or AMD, I think it is rather humorous.

Also... I feel the situation is a little different from the early Pentium D days because that was Intel slapping two inefficient cores on the same die, now they are slapping two quite impressive cores on the same die.

Does anyone have an estimate on how much these new Quad Cores are going to cost? Does anyone feel that this will ultimately drive down the cost of the dual core processors? What about motherboards? Right now the motherboards for the Core 2 processors are relatively high when comparing it to an AMD based processor motherboard. I can already envision this to be far out of scope for my pocket book.

Pricing will not be set on the Extreme edition till next week so no one call tell you 100% what it will exactly be. Just like every extreme edition they will more than likely start out at $999 to $1200 on the day of the launch. If you've notice the X6800 has dropped to $949.50 from when it started at $1200+ when it was launched.

Regular Core 2 Quad processors will be out early 2007 and you can bet that they will be priced along the lines of the conroes pricing strategy.

In terms of motherboard pricing consider the two flagship lines that are coming out from Intel and AMD, both are still unreleased. Many Intel boards are already quad-core ready just need a BIOS update. On the other hand AMD's 4x4 platform will require 2 processors, a new dual CPU motherboard (not going to be cheap) and will be space limited (think no PhysX card with SLI or Crossfire)....

Unless you buy $1000 processors quad-core won't be for you, but come 2007 when the full line launches it will be in your reach and motherboard prices will be lower than now!
