Calling Memory Gurus

Alright, since I'm running Multiple VMs lately I think its time to upgrade the Ram.

Basically I want memory that can at least 425FSB with less than 2.1 Vdimm. That's all the P5B-E can muster and 3.4GHZ is all I can really ask for. I don't feel the need for anymore.

Any recommendations? I think 2Gigs would be a minimum, the more the better. Up to 3gigs I believe is the most Windows XP can recognize.

If you go Cosair remember this...

9136C5's, 8888C4's, 8500C5's, 10000C5's, and 6400C3's all use Micron & the rest don't... (6400C4 and 6400 have always been PROMOS)

Running 4GB on Vista Ultimate 32-bit shows up as 3.25GB... I know cause that's what I run ;)

Yeah I've pretty much written off Corsair. Its tough navigating the memory world.

200-250 for 2GB, up to 300-350 for 4GB. But the default voltage has to be under 2.1 for the P5B-E to work

Here is the page of options that Newegg has...fill in whatever you want.

I would suggest PC6400, CAS Latency of 4, 2x 1Gb sticks, and 240-pin....that narrows it down to good ram. Some of this stuff is wicked, too.

The reviews are good, and I believe they use the Micron D9s.......A few reviewers mention 950+ mhz....which is your ticket to freedom.

Gamble look at the voltage, its stock 2.2. My board only does 2.1V tops

Been there done that. Problem is most of the times Newegg lists the wrong Voltage. I always have to double check with the manufacturer website

Promos? Micron can do tight timings and can handle higher voltages better.

They are ~$290 but should be sweet.....

I know they're just PC2-9200 that didn't make the grade, but they should do ~425MHz easy IMO.
I wouldn't go for any of the cheaper G.Skill stuff, I doubt they will do much over 400 without alot of voltage.
These would be the only G.Skill I'd go for

I've also grown to like A-DATA.....they are cheap but quality!
My current sticks can do 280MHz, My old G.Skill could only muster 272MHz and the ADATA can do it with TRP set to 3!

I haven't used DDR2 yet so I can only go by what I've read in forums and reviews!

Go for OCZ platinum edition.

Though you want to got for very fast RAM, and thus very expensive. it is very useless. If your RAM frequency exceeds your FSB, then that creates a bottleneck, you would then have to drop the CPU multiplyer, and increase the FSB. picture filling a 20 ounce coke bottle with water and pouring it out. moving from a 20 ounce to a 2 liter with the same size opening will not increase the rate at which you can pour the water out.

I'm not sure if you are still looking at RAM, but if so....

I have used both the Corsair 2x1gb 6400 and Corsair 2x1gb 6400c4 RAM. I never could confirm what chips they used, but I sort of figured it wasn't D9s. That said...

Both of these kits boot and run 100% stable at 1.8v. I built a new rig back in August with an E6300 and Gigabyte DS3, the infamous board that couldn't run most high end RAM due to 1.8v boot issues as ya probably well know. ;) I have had zero problems with the build, F1 BIOS or F10.

Both kits will do 501mhz, 1,007mhz effective with 2.1v @ 5-5-5-15 timings... As far as stability goes, I have a link to the 24 hour+ 501FSB run in my sig.

The kits will run overclocked with less than 2.1v voltage around the FSB speeds you have given, infact the vanilla kit claims 1.9v stock, but runs stable at 1.8v.

Back in August the vanilla Corsair 2x1gb 6400 was just about $180 when I ordered mine, it is now $169 shipped after MIR.
