random question

say i've got 2 x 1G sticks in my pc, and i feel like upgrading.


is it okay to take any old brand of the same kind of ram and pop it in?

AMD Phenom II X4 940BE @ 3._GHz
6GB DDR2 800 CAS4
MSI 8800GTS 512 (G92)
2x500GB Seagate RAID 0
Corsair HX620

kind of as long as it has the same cas latency and speed and such, but make sure they are about the same speeds. You can change settings as long as both are stable at those settings. It is easier and slightly better to use the same brand and size modules throughout though. oh and make sure voltage is about the same. though as long as the new ram takes less voltage and can handle the extra it should also be fine.

freaking awesome, thanks! i'm planning on going ahead and finally building my rig by the end of the month, but you never know i might end up with one of those memory kits from the drawing (too hopeful i know) but if indeed i did win, how would that kit and this kit ( http://www.newegg.com/product/product.a ... 6820231065 ) work together?

you've already been helpful but with my curiosity, you give an inch and i'll get a mile more curious!

IDEALLY it should be okay. Sometimes the newer stick may need some tweaking on the bios or manually enter the specs to get it working properly. If your system is OCed, I would suggest first clear hte cmos so the mobo can read the memory's specs automatically.
