Later this month Intel Bearlake desktop motherboards will be released for the very first time. While these motherboards will feature the latest and greatest Intel P35 chipsets they also happen to be the first desktop platform that utilizes DDR3 memory modules. For those that don't know DDR3 is the next generation of Double Data Rate (DDR) Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory (SDRAM). Read on to find out more about DDR3 and what it might mean for you.

One question left, will your RST Pro tester still work with DDR3? Does it need a firmware upgrade?

not sure but i've been saving up for the RST Pro3, which is a PCIe.

Like the article mentioned it now has an 8-bit pre-fetch architecture compared to DDR2's 4-bit which helps with the lame timings. And then you get the standard high FSB modules. Also what's nice is the very low voltage it uses!

Definitely some memory to wait on til it fully matures. Maybe by the end of the summer???

doubtful if the memory will even be out by the end of the summer, let alone good memory at acceptable timings

It will be out very soon like I noted in the article... so early summer... DDR3 won't be the issue... as always the issue will be chipsets... ;)

I buy some nice state-of-the-art components for a new build and....

Something even more state-of-the-art appears on the horizon, usually right after my Visa card is billed by Newegg.

Yeah, I'm afraid its always going to be like that. And if you wait you'll never get anything as the next best thing will only be a short while away. You did the right thing diving in now (CPU price cuts are nice right now, and the DDR2 prices are at the lowest I've seen them).

As I mentioned in the review... 1066Mhz modules will likely use 1.5V with 1333-1400MHz using 1.7V I could only imagine that 1600 and above would use around 1.8-1.9V, but no one knows as no one can get a 2GB kit over ~1450 or so with stability. 4GB kits are worse and no one is even talking about 4GB 1333Mhz kits to be honest.

When DDR2 came out they said we would see 800MHz... DDR3 is saying 1600MHz will be standard down the road... Since DDR2 is hitting over 1300MHz it's safe to say that DDR3 will hit will over 2000MHz, but it will take over a year if I had to guess.

i just thought that 2GHz is range DDR3 was planned to reach.

Objective? Nope... We asked Super Talent, Mushkin, OCZ and many other companies for info and samples and they had nothing to give an no information to add! Corsair and Kingston shipped up early samples and told us what they could and for that they get mentioned!

this wasn't a preview or a review... this was an editorial about DDR3... You guys are smoking crack if you think it's more than that... If you to see other brands in our articles please feel free to e-mail them and tell them to send us samples!
