SATA DVD-R/W?

Lite-On's not bad that's our standard shop replacement unit and they're cheap, but there's not a whole lot of advantage to using SATA over IDE right now, I don't think, other than like you said, to reduce cable clutter.

I don't think the optics in the drives are any faster on SATA than IDE.

The only difference between SATA and IDE optical drives (e.g. NEC AD-7200S vs NEC AD-7200A) is the interface. Aside from that, they're the exact same drive.

I'm just trying to reduce cable clutter while I upgrade to a faster drive than the one I have currently. That's the only reason I'm interested in the SATA form factor.

I'll say I do love my Lite-On but as hnzw pointed out it's not the best burning...I wouldn't trade it for anything as far as ripping though.

If we're talkin about sound quality I think I'll stick to my Oppo 980HD SACD/DVD-A player, Yamaha RX-V1800, and set of KEF IQ9's. Glorious 2 channel stereo like David Gilmore intended!

From what I've been told (and I don't know whether it's true or just BS) LG is pretty much manufacturing everything and subbing parts out to other companies like Hanns-G; Lite-On; etc. I know LG makes good stuff so I wouldn't turn my nose up at it if the price is right...

And not perpetuating the speaker flaming but I'll stick with my window rattling floor pounding Klipsch ProMedia 400w 4.1 THX speakers!! Klipsch has been making kickass audio components since God created the Earth and they're almost indestructible. Mine are nearly 10 years old and have been relocated through 5 different states. Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and now New York

Well, the Samsung's out of the running as it's not a dual layer burner.

I read a bunch of the New Egg reviews of the Lite On. About 15 people report the drive just fails after 6months. Anyone here have a similar experience?

I've bought two of these, drives work perfectly fine and one of 'em is two years old at least.

The only complaint I have is that when ejecting discs the older drive will occasionally pop the DVD/CD up out of the tray, so the tray jams halfway extended with the DVD wedged in tightly. It's mounted horizontally like normal. The newer drive used to do the same thing, but it no longer ejects the disc tray with the same vigor/force as it once did so the CD remains in place now. Used to drive me crazy though.

I'm pretty satisfied by the performance of my Samsung Sata DVD-DL writer (SH-S203B).It's also an excellent reader & writes very fast on all medias.No problems so far. All reviews favoured this writer too.

I only hear good things about Lite-On. I haven't had mine fail (just a cd burner) that is more than a few years old and most people I know have one (those that build their own) I don't think any have failed.

Good Drive, I like mine and have never had one fail on me yet!
