8800GT close to 90C now

Postby KnightRid » Mon Mar 09, 2009 6:04 am

Well i have to stop folding anytime i am doing anything at all on the computer because the video card is getting close to 90C!! I removed the OC and have seen it go around 85C, so it is a little better. I STILL have not gotten the Accelero since the cigar habit started and I am spending more on them than my computers right now :?

Is there any other cooler that is more readily available that I could look into getting? I am having a hard time finding the Accelero S1 for a decent enough price and I figure there might be something better out there now a days.

Mike

My ppd seems to be holding pretty decent, but I have the gpu folding paused any time i am on this computer - playing games, etc, so I am surprised I have not taken more of a hit. I do let it run all night unpaused though.

You might want to remount the heatsink/fan and put new TIM on it. It looses its ability to conduct heat over time.

i agree with DX, slap some new thermal paste on there, is your 8800GT G92? (i forget if they all were) my G92 GSO's go up to 85 if my room is warm(except that one time one got up to 113C) but you aren't running dual cards in that box are you?

you can:

change compound and clean the fan+shroud;
change fan speed(possibly, i can't with my cards);
increase air coming into the case with more fans/better fans;
increase internal air flow(move wires and such);
simply get new VGA cooling (like i should :\ )

you can take out the whiney fan, make a shroud out of cardboard and ziptie an 80mm fan to it

Ok, I already changed paste when I wrote the last time about it getting hot - seemed to stabilize it for maybe a week, but then it just goes up again.

I have tried airflow changes to the extreme of removing the side of the case to make sure more air would get in - no help. It actually did not change the temp of the video card at all - this Aerocool case must have really good airflow.

fan speed is running at 100% as soon as the card hits 65C - whining like hell and the temps just keep a climbin ;)

new hsf is what I am looking for, but the accelero S1 is hard to find, so I would like other suggestions for a good cooler for this card to keep the OC on it and run floding without killing it.

cardboard shroud? at 90c? now that kinda worries me. Do you have a link for me to see about how to mount it on the gpu to get the 80mm fan working properly? I have 80 and 120mm fans lying around, so I would be willing to give it a go if it will help the temps!

Nice! I saw a huge temperature drop when i moved from stock cooling on my 8800GTS 512 to a Thermalright T-Rad2 with a 120mm yate loon strapped onto it. I'm betting you're going to be very satisfied with your end result. But right now I just got my swiftech watercooling kit for cpu/gpu, my new motherboard, and my Phenom II X4 940BE so I'm going to have to check in on your progress later :supz:
Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P
AMD Phenom II X4 965BE @ 3.5 GHz

I have to wait till next week for mine :( . I would love to have a water cooling setup that would handle the 8800gt, but I have been buying too many cigars..lol

Wonder if I will be able to OC it any further with the Accelero...hmmm

Mike

Video card was off all last night and my ppd shot down into the 8000's - OUCH! I am running it again until it hits close to 90, then i will shut it down for a while.
