Identify This Missouri Grass Weed

Postby Apoptosis » Sat Jul 17, 2010 11:09 am

My neighbor has some crazy weeds taking over his yard... Just started this summer... They are easy to pull out and are growing amazingly fast and spreading. Here are some pictures of his yard:

Anyone have any idea what this is? It is starting to come into my yard and fast.

have that same stuff here too, just started like 5 years ago and spreads like wildfire, the problem with it aside from looking like crap is that it grows much faster than normal grass and mower blades have a harder time with it so you have to go slower(assuming you want it totally cut w/out random blades of grass sticking up) and only like half of it actually can get picked up (assuming you bag it)

for us that stuff popped up in the wettest areas of our lawn and spread, i'd say not watering it much might keep it away but it might spread anyway

I'd also be very interested if anyone finds a solution to this crap grass as it's covering about an acre and a half here

on another note, ever have moles?

I have that stuff too. I think it's a wild grass, but not sure what the name is. For me it shows up in the wetter part of the lawn. Good luck getting rid of it. For me it's the worst in August when the rest of my lawn is dying it will be the only thing flourishing.

well, I found out what it is...

It's Nutsedge or Nut Grass

It is supposed to be hard as heck to get rid of and you need to get a nutsedge killer. Sprays like Weed-B-Gone Max won't do a thing to it. That sucks as I just bought a bottle and applied it yesterday.

There is a product out there just for sedges called Sedgehammer (used to be called Manage) - http://www.gowanco.com/ProductInfo~pid~ ... er%20.aspx

"SedgeHammer herbicide knocks out nutsedge without injury to turfgrass, established ornamentals, shrubs, and/or trees. SedgeHammer provides post-emergence control of both purple and yellow nutsedge. SedgeHammer also controls many broadleaf weeds and suppresses kyllinga. "

I looked for it yesterday here in Missouri and couldn't find it at Home Depot, Lowes or Rural King. The product kills just three things: Purple Nutsedge, Yellow Nutsedge and Kyllinga.

The bad thing? 1.33oz of SedgeHammer sells for $119.95 - http://www.domyownpestcontrol.com/sedge ... -1340.html

Well that certainly explains a few things. I never could figure out the name of what it was. Wow, that stuff's expensive! Have you checked Ace out yet? I'll let you know if I come up with a cheaper solution.

Well I found individual packs that spot treat 1,000 square feet.

.9 Gram Container: Remove water soluble bag from the foil packet and drop into 1 gallon of water. The 0.9 grams will cover 1,000 sq ft.

I found a local mom and pop nursery that does carry SedgeHammer, so I will grab a couple packs and treat my front yard. From what I can see online the .9 Gram packs sell for $10-$12 each. Not sure what they charge locally, but it is worth a shot.

Locally they wanted $18 plus 8.5% tax, so E-Bay at $10 shipped with no tax a pack is way better.

Have this stuff over here in the UK and it is so damn hard to get rid of. I am working as a contractor/grounds keeper on a huge 100 flat area with plenty on grass to mow, but one area (the biggest grassed area is 15M by 6M) is full of these weeds  Ok pulling it out works a treat but within a week it comes back twice as bad and can't find anything to kill the stuff with :(

can you link to where you got it/pm me? my parents don't trust ebay and it isnt available anywhere here(even the gardening places and plant nursery's have nutsedge growing all over lol) and i have to mow a couple acres of pure nutsedge (was about a foot tall when i just mowed), its nasty even with newly sharpened blades and a clean deck.

If you need it today you can get it at Charlies Farm and Home Center. That is the only place I found it. It's on the end cap on the isle of herbicides and pesticides. Out by you, I'm not sure where to send you.

E-Bay is cheaper, so I ordered some more packs from there.
