How much PSU do I need? I5 2500k w/ GTX 570

Postby Skippman » Fri Oct 07, 2011 1:08 pm

I'm building a new rig and think I might finally be overpowering my HX640 Corsair. Here's the specs.

i5 2500k
Asus Sabertooth
eVGA GTX 570 Classified
2 7200RPM Western Digital Black HDDs
LiteOn DVD-R
Swiftech MCP 655 pump
5 Yate Loons

ThermalTake is recommending 715W if I run two GPUs (which I will eventually). That sound right to you guys?

Personally...

I think your Corsair HX650W (think you made a typo) is going to be golden. I say keep it and try it out before ordering in a new one. My Corsair HX620 has been retired from the test bench, but it ran GTX580's in SLI just fine.

My TX650 powered my i7-930 oc'd to 4Ghz, with twin DDC pumps, 6 fans, two drives, and an overclocked GTX480.

Sweet jebus bubba! Do you have one loop for you GPU and one for your proc?

I could use help transplanting my WC loop into that Corsair 700.

I always buy the Corsair hx750. I bought the Corsair AX750 and I did not like the connectors. I believe that having more power is better as long as it is quiet. You never know when you are going to need more power. :)

In that pic it was. Not no more. Had the dual loops to isolate parts for testing. It's since been a single loop dual rad, but that machine has been setting for a while. Thinking parting what's left of her out and down sizing to something more space friendly. That rig put a dent in the electric bill for sure, mainly due to the 480. Made a good space heater though LOL

750 watt power supply will be enough to run a gtx 570.

Suitable Video/Graphic Card for high resolution gaming

As you can see from there the wattage at the wall is only 556W which means they were only pulling up to about 500W from the PSU, well below the limit of the 750HX, Hardware secrets was able to pull over 900W from it sustained at high temps and have it stay in spec, 500W isnt excessive load for a 750HX, it isnt even moderate load, if you were getting a new unit i would suggest grabbing an 850W for two of them for some extra overhead but you already have a great PSU that can do it, its a bit tighter than an 850W would be but still more than capable of handling 2 GTX 570s, even if you OC your system pretty good, so there isnt a reason to buy another PSU that isnt going to be significantly better or more powerful, its just going to cost you additional money.
