Here are a couple screen shots from my gaming thus far. All shots are taken at 1024x768 with no AA or AF enabled. The card is a 9800Pro 256mb/256-bit card... and yes it stutters a bunch at these settings on an Intel 3.8EE w/ 2gb Corsiar XMS memory.

you can build a computer that will play doom3 for around $500. sell what you have, including your baseball cards (thanks for the suggestion capper) and build a new system.

So what would be an intel solution for only $500 to be able to meet Doom3's suggested requirements?

Well i dont think you could make an intel for that price, i was thinking AMD with an NF2 mobo. if you want i can put a system together and price it out.

I got a brand new retail boxed Barton 2500+ for $80 that will do the job of the CPU just fine. It's a pre-lock chip. I had 6 of them at one time and all did over 2.2GHz on air... grab the chip an nForce2 Ultra 400Gb chipset motherboard... 2 x 512mb sticks of name brand value memory than can run CL2.5 and then stick in an Nvidia 5900XT card...

I'm not sure what you are running now... but keep your old optical drive, floppy, hard drive (format it), and case/PSU (if it's 300W+)

Can be done for under $500

If you have a case, power supply, hd, and cd-rw then you can save even more and get a faster graphics card or faster cpu. if you give me an idea of what you have i can mix and match parts. This will also out preform a low end intel system that costs about $100 more.

wouldn't you use the 35W 2400+? It O/Cs the same and runs a bit cooler.
I'd either spend $27 on the Lite On 52X, or $45 on the Lite On 52X,16X dual

Im not sure he wants to or is into overclocking thats why i shy away from the xp-m, and i think there is no good reason to get a cdrw unless it also plays dvds but then thats me. Also the Aopen should be a solid drive and comes with three color of face plate so you can match, gray, black, beige.

The Lite On is a dually. It does R/RW CD at 52X, and does DVD at 16X. Thats the $45 version though. If he is just looking for something to play games, the DVD player doesn't matter, or can be added later.
As to O/Cing the chip, it doesn't take alot, uses much less power, and runs cooler.

Not a bad buy, good choice on the 9700 pro, i would have gone with the shuttle mobo rather than the epox as it has slightly better overclocking and is less expenseive but the 8RDA3+ does have some nice features. All and all not bad for a ~650.
