Please help...I'm in despair!

Hello,

I downloaded something but the install/setup cunningly installed another program without my knowledge.

This 'program' is like an anti virus software alert which sits in my toolbar, flashes and pops up bubbles every 2 minutes, telling me I have critical system errors and viruses (Nonsense).

When I click on the tray icon, my browser directs me to virusburst.com an antivirus software site, so I have come to the conclusion the two things are connected.

Since there is nothing I can find under add/remove programs, or by using various freeware uninstall programs to locate the program, I have been unable to remove it and a system restore won't work either.

How the hell can I stop this poxy thing from ruining my life?

Download ad-aware and spybot, install and update them, and then scan your computer. Do one at a time and they should de-junk your computer for you.

Also, take a look at Hijack This. It may assist you in identifying the problem as well. One other thing that you can do is right click on your Internet Explorer Icon and select Properities, then Programs and then Manage Add Ons. Anything not Microsoft is suspect and you can disable it just by highlighting the program and then selecting Disable.

I know the frustration and I hope you get it worked out soon. Let us know if you get it fixed and how you fixed it, that way we can refer to it in the future in case someone else runs into the same problem. BTW, what program were you installing and from where?

spybot should probably be updated to remove it by now, jsut make sure you get the updates before running spybot.

Thanks for all your help guys, much appreciated thank-you.

I tried 'Housecall' in the end (I'm sure you know what this is) and it seems to have done the trick, however it has disappeared/reappeared before so I'm not counting my chickens.

It found 12 problems, one of which was 'gtpbx.dll' in System32 which is linked with virusburst. Housecall was unable to delete it, and neither was I as it was in use/write protected. So I moved it to the desktop next to my recycle bin, restarted, then as windows started I quickly moved it to my recycle bin before it had a chance to load (if anyone knows a better way to remove these things let me know).

RAZORBACX - The cause of the problem was a video codec installer, I can't remember exactly the file name or where I got it from (sorry), I was trying to watch a stream and it said I needed it. Well done for wanting to know to help others, top man!

MIKE - Thanks for the links, helped me with the DLL files I needed to remove, very useful thanks.

DMB2000uk - I also downloaded Spybot aswell, and it found some other things so thanks for that, but ad-aware was a free scan only (pah!).

The free scan is all you need, the upgraded/pro versions are more for corporate use than home. They still give you all the new adware definitions. It says on the program somewhere that its free for private use.

Glad you were able to sort everything out, if you dont already have antivirus software, i would reccomend either AVG or Avast, both free not sure which is better though.
