Postby Illuminati » Fri Oct 19, 2007 3:40 pm

Just wanted to remind anyone who hasn't heard yet, Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon was officially released yesterday. I've been running it here at work for a few days and so far is solid as a rock!

I'm looking at upgrading my 7.04, but I want to know if the 3D drivers for ATI work yet. I couldn't run compiz or beyrl on my 7.04 on my x1800. only ati card I had it working on at all was my 9600 but I sold that old Athlon xp computer a couple months ago.

upgraded my 7.04 install overnight to 7.10, been having problems before the upgrade and still was. some thing worked better, others worked worse. I think I'm going to clean install it. my kiba dock actually loaded correctly for once though. I was excited about that. cept it had this big black line behind it instead of the lower part of the wallpaper that was supposed to be showing behind it. Damn my love for this operating system and my only owning ati cards. Since Ati never works well with linux.

Well I just registered over there and ordred the 2-CD PC version.

This will be my first try of any UNIX flavored OS outside of the workplace. I'll give it a try on the spare machine here.

So, if I need help, this is the place to be. :)

also, found the ndiswrapper that was in the previous releases doesn't work as well and seems to be freezing whenever I have it load a .inf file so I can't use my internet on that side unless I string two 15 ft cat 5 cables through a switch to my router.

I tried installing on the PC and it won't work with my new GFX card :x

I know there's an issue with the NV 8 series and there's a workaround using the alternate install CD, but I'm too lazy to do it.

I'm now going to try Fedora 8
I haven't used Red Hat since version 7, so it's been a while.
(I'm an OS junky btw - I intend on installing Solaris the same HDD too (they use that in work))

Just installed "Mint Linux" which is based on Ubuntu 7.10 and uses the same software repos.
http://www.linuxmint.com/
Installed first attempt, I have nv drivers installed and it includes all codecs by default.
All I need to do is disable some servers like CUPS etc. and I'll be go to go for SMP Folding again :supz:

Now to see if I can get Solaris to boot as well, I keep messing up the chainloader to boot back into XP / Vista ](*,)

Ubuntu doesn't like any 8 series cards!
Ubuntu uses the "nv" driver in the Linux kernel, but this doesn't support the 8 series.
The workaround is to install via the alternate CD and via the command prompt edit the xorg.conf file.
In the section called "devices" change "nv" for "vesa", then start gdm
When your at the desktop again, you can install the latest nvidia driver.

It's a pain in the ass to be honest!

MintLinux is exactly the same as Ubuntu, it just has some extra programs and features, all of which you can install / setup with Ubuntu.
I'm a lazy ass, So I prefer having it all done for me

We now have Ubuntu loaded on an HP Pavilion 534X this evening. :)

I was able to find a spare drive to try it out in the machine. My boy is having the fun with it.

He's had the itch for a few weeks to say good-bye Windows XP and VISTA.

It will be interesting seeing how the USB hardware will work in time.

So, the CD does work and the format looks so clean. 8)
