Re: Scratch Build: The Ultimate Computer Desk (56k Warning!!

You could always pickup some window screen mesh. Install it into a frame that fits in the opening on the side of the desk. That way when you need to knock the dust off the frame comes out in one piece. Just a thought. Thanks Major_A - that's a great idea. Even just the way screen doors are made is ...

Re: Scratch Build: The Ultimate Computer Desk (56k Warning!!

Looks like you need to get crossflow in there. That wood is going to insulate a lot of heat. this desk is coming along nice from what i see. and as major has said you will need to get crossflow as that wood as it warms up will cause the whole system to heat up. maybe not much but then let find out ...

Re: Scratch Build: The Ultimate Computer Desk (56k Warning!!

Wow, with all those SATA cables there, it sure messes things up, no? http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/9508/img6540x.jpg http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/6630/img6541y.jpg I went ahead and threw in my current video card (Radeon HD5770, which kicks some pretty decent butt still). I'm sure I'll see an ...

Re: Scratch Build: The Ultimate Computer Desk (56k Warning!!

Spindle sanders are fantastic for those pencil marksings & hard to reach areas. IMHO, routing the cables behind the foam fan holders is a pretty good idea. Yes, spindle sander - I will use that much more often in the future. As for the cable routings... I guess it's been a while eh! Well,...

New Layout Work

And, we've gone so far, yet, gained so little, eh? It'll get done, I swear! As they (wish I knew who they were) the Devil is in the details. They sure are, my god, building the desk was easy! All this small stuff though, phewph! How are you getting these companies to send you all this stuff? Heya s...

Seasonic and a New Layout

congrats on the build. would love to see the whole unit with the doors open and see how it looks :) Thanks DJ Tucker - I'll get there eventually lol First off I want to give out a huge thank you to Seasonic, who has decided to sponsor The Ultimate Computer Desk by sending a ~really~ sweet Power Sup...

Re: Scratch Build: The Ultimate Computer Desk (56k Warning!!

Some awesome server systems, handy socket 775 boards + Core2Duo's..my god..you've struck gold! Will you considering selling a/some 775 boards + CPUs? what kind of DDR RAM are those? :) :) For the server, you could mount the drives in the open area behind the top intake fans, in fron of the PSU. See...

Re: Scratch Build: The Ultimate Computer Desk (56k Warning!!

Just my thoughts, so don't get upset. Why are you using old or outdated parts? What you are building is way outdated. Not to mention a heat hog. I don't get it. Why not build with the latest tech? I would never use a old power supply that I don't know the history. Buy a new power supply, no less th...

Server Setup

I was in an extremely fortunate position recently. A friend of mine's work was moving from a large location to a much smaller location, and he had asked me if I wanted to come scope out the old office for any old bits of computer stuff that might be useful to me. To my shock and amazement, I was ind...

really coming along now! what are you gonna be using the server for? Yup, this is the fun part! No idea what I'll use the server for lol... we'll see! After gluing a few blocks of foam together with a spray adhesive, I trimmed the block down to the appropriate size using a bandsaw. http://img854.im...

Installing the drawers

sorry to hear about all the re-work. so close then you have to go back and do it again. I hate when that happens. Yup - it's all good though, hopefully there won't be any ~actual~ major setbacks from here to the end! Little set back, but it's well worth taking the time to correct it. Anyways, your ...

Fixing the Drawers

I love it. Any idea how much this set you back in parts? Looks like an executive desk that would set you back at least a grand at the store. Thanks Major_A, not even close to that much! I think I'm looking at between 500-600 for materials, paint, sandpaper etc. I spent quite a bit more on that for ...

Re: Scratch Build: The Ultimate Computer Desk (56k Warning!!

looks phenomenal :prayer: Thanks skier! Getting there eh! So - I finally had some time this weekend to do a bit of work on The Ultimate Computer Desk. Here's a little shot of the desk as it sits now. Note that the drawers aren't installed, there's clutter everywhere, the two cabinets are not lined ...

Before Transportation

I have been following your project since the beginning. What I see so far, it looks like downtown(that's a good thing). Can't wait to see the finished product. Like downtown eh? you think I could fly you to WI to build me a bar for my rec room? lol... Hehe, all expenses paid? Sure, let me know when! ;) ;) I kind of forgot to take some pictures of the cabinets after I applied a pair of coats of polyurethane, but here's the status of the project so far http://img856.imagesha...

Staining the Cabinets

Well, got some time to start the staining of the cabinets this weekend, and overall, everything went pretty well. Started off with a bit of detailed sanding by hand, and then a good dusting with a tack cloth / cloth with paint thinner. http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/2489/img6145v.jpg http://img2...

Sanding the Cabinets

With the trim all glued up and dry, and the weather nice and warm, I decided to take the cabinets outside to have the trim sanded flush. I start with 80 grit to get all the bits nice and close, and then move to 120 grit with the random orbit sander in preparation for staining. http://img19.imageshac...

Trimming the Cabinets

Doesn't that suck? Spending all that time to apply the stain, then the finish just to have it slip and collect some saw dust. Can't wait to see the final product. This seems like one large desk. Yup, should have done it the old fashioned way in the first place. The paint cones worked great for the ...

Drawer Face Staining

With the drawers themselves all stained up, it was time to stain the drawer fronts! http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/8049/img6116b.jpg Since most of the back of the drawer fronts won't be visible, I decided that I could probably stain and poly both sides at once... Pre stain! http://img848.imageshac...
