Re: DNS Resolver IPs: Use ISP supplied, or a service?
Update to my old post (forgot I posted it). Apparently MIT got mildly DOS attacked so they pulled their DNS services from being public. Do not use 17.70.0.160 or 18.71.0.151 any longer. So yeah, stick with google or level 3 (4.2.2.2), or just your ISP's unless they suck and are slow/go down all the ...

Re: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 4TB vs WD Black 4TB Hard Drive Re
I think it really just comes to luck and the specific drive in question. We all know that a company might have a bad product or design from time to time. I've had my fair share of all brands die, but like you pointing out my sample range is too small to make any brand conclusions. Before doing this...

Re: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 4TB vs WD Black 4TB Hard Drive Re
Personally I would avoid the seagate. This is very anecdotal but we have had far more Seagate drives die on us lately than WD ones at work. Granted its probably a small sample of <5000 drives but there has been a significant increase of seagate failures on drives < 3 years old over the past few year...

Re: Migrating SSD to different mobo
Since you arent switching chip types you have decent odds of it working. You may want to run a sysprep though, just removing the drivers doesnt always work where sysprep is sorta designed for exactly this.

Re: DNS Resolver IPs: Use ISP supplied, or a service?
Really not sure what you are trying to accomplish with the dynamic dns service. I dont think it does what you think it does. Dynamic DNS = makes your home dhcp address accessible from a 'static' dns entry even if your home IP changes. IE: myhomecomputer.dyndns.org will always point to whatever IP ad...

Re: motherboard to support Q8300
FYI, SBS2011 is the end of the line for the SBS series according to MS. SBS -> full domain/exchange conversions are pretty miserable, I am in the middle of 2 right now and have done probably 10-12 in the past, they never go smoothly. If this is just for you to play around with at home that is fine, ...

Re: RAID 5 rebuilding?
Most likely your wireless card drivers got fragged in the rebuild. Completely remove and reinstall them and you should be good. I would recommend sticking to RAID 1 for any non-server/disk array use. RAID 5/6 has its own set of issues that unless you understand and know enough to determine it is wha...

Re: RAID 5 rebuilding?
Activity lights should be doing something if the volume is rebuilding. I would power down and make sure everything is connected properly. Verify that the raid controller says it is rebuilding (not sure on that specific one but usually you can go into the card's 'BIOS' and see what is happening). Bes...

Re: RAID 5 rebuilding?
It may be rebuilding. Do you not have a disk activity light on the machine? Rebuilding a raid array with 3x 250GB drives could easily take a day or so depending. I would expect 10-12 hours at most but stranger things have happened to me on much more powerful hardware. Restarting during a rebuild is ...

Re: RAID 5 rebuilding?
Typically you are able to boot the OS still with only a single drive 'failure' while the rebuild is happening to a new disk. This being a softRAID type of card though I am not positive if that still holds true (though I dont see why it wouldnt). Is the volume flagged as bootable? Is there any disk a...

Re: So I upgraded Zeus, the PC you guys helped me build in 2
My CPU Coole r I went with the Corsair h50. Before anyone bashes it for not being a true water cooler and even beaten by a high end and cheaper air cooler. I didn't get it for that. I got it for silence and for looks. It REALLY opens up the case. It makes it look so much more modern than my old hug...

Re: RAID 5 rebuild question
My problem is only one hard drive went bad. I replaced with identical drive and now it shows all 3 HD's in green, says they are member disks, and under the status it says "rebuild" but it won't boot into server 2008 OS. At bottom in yellow it says "volumes with "rebuild" st...

Re: RAID 5 rebuild question
Wow, had this been posted in storage I would have caught it sooner and saved you some headache. The following pertains to RAID5 (and in some cases RAID in general). Degraded: single drive failure, the array *should* still boot and run and all however it is running that 'missing' drive off parity. Re...

Have you tried some upside-down-ternet? http://www.ex-parrot.com/pete/upside-down-ternet.html :) Yeah, I saw that script when looking into how to implement custom squid scripts. I have the thing set up at this point so I may do some other things eventually and screw with anyone thinking they will a...

Re: elbrus CPU
Not sure you will have much luck with this. Sparc has pretty much been put to pasture and you are looking for a small Russian maker of these chips that doesn't look to have actually produced any in a large batch. I did find reference to them producing a batch of 50 chips with the possibility for 100...

Any improvement wil...
