Re: Win 7 Laptop Will Not Boot. Period.

Don't know. I got everything backed up thanks to Ubuntu. Had doc appt today along with a few errands which took forever so just got home. Soon as I catch my breath I'm going to jump back on it. It was about a 18 mos ago he had the new drive put in. I was swamped at the time so he took it someplace e...

Oh forgot to mention, the DVD is good. I've booted 3 other computers with it.

Re: Win 7 Laptop Will Not Boot. Period.

That's the worst part! It won't boot from the Windows DVD! It acts like it's going to then it winds up at the same black screen with a cursor. But I can boot to Ubuntu Desktop from DVD. I've never seen that before.

Re: Win 7 Laptop Will Not Boot. Period.

That sounds about right! ](*,) I'm backing up data via Ubuntu as I write this. It obviously doesn't happen very often because I posted this same question on several different boards within a few minutes of posting it here and, until you responded, nobody has ever seen anything like it. I mean I've h...

Win 7 Laptop Will Not Boot. Period.

This is a Toshiba Satellite A665-S6094, however the usual recovery rules don't apply because mfr. OS not installed. Unit has Windows 7 installed by previous local repair facility after HDD crash. User has copy of installation disc. User ran a virus scan (I forget which AV. One that user bought that ...

Re: "Hacked" Dell OptiPlex 755

In a stranger turn of events, I let MemTest run through the entire cycle even though I figured the RAM was good after a few minutes. In my experience, the test lets you know almost immediately if something's amiss. I rebooted and when it came up I tried moving the mouse and, lo and behold, it worked...

Re: "Hacked" Dell OptiPlex 755

Yeah, now I'm beginning to think the mobo bit the big one. HDD & RAM both tested good. Somebody has apparently "worked" on it in the past. Strange but there's 3 GB of RAM installed: 2 GB of DDR2-400 and 1 GB of DDR2-333. The stock 80 GB HDD has been replaced with a 750 GB Seagate. Mous...

Re: "Hacked" Dell OptiPlex 755

Actually, never mind, I think. While continuing to look into it, I got a couple of BSODs. HDD might be bad after all. Running diagnostics again now.

"Hacked" Dell OptiPlex 755

My neighbor brought me his mom's Dell OptiPlex 755 with XP Pro. The only details I have on it are: (1 That it was "Hacked" at her home (somehow, neither of them can tell me exactly what happened other than it was from one night to the next morning); 2)"She cannot boot or connect to th...

Re: Routers routers rah rah rah

As it turns out, I swapped the TWC router for a regular cable modem and all is well. It had to be something simple.

Thanks

..... Unless you know what you have there and just arent telling us. I'd like to get the problem resolved. Leaving out details or equipment would be just as big of a waste of my time as everyone else's. BTW, first, I'm not getting paid by the hour for all this aggravation and second, I do not opera...

Re: WD MyBook Essential went belly-up

Well, I lucked up in a small sense yet in a big way. I added an old 160 GB hard drive today and found that when I transferred the files to the external, I only copied them. And, for whatever reason, I didn't format the drive before I removed it from the system. That had the bulk, unfortunately not a...

Re: WD MyBook Essential went belly-up

backing up to a single location is not the best, two backups. I know but don't know where to back up 300 GB of music! 800 DVDs? Planning to buy an additional hdd for that purpose but didn't have enough time. Sucks but that's life, for me anyway. Seems like TestDisk is the tool to use for this but i...

Re: WD MyBook Essential went belly-up

I haven't delved into it yet but I glanced at the TestDisk results on my way out this morning and it showed over 80 K files found. When I get back I'll see what's the next step.

WD MyBook Essential went belly-up

It certainly is raining ca-ca on my little house in Sloan, NY, lately. My 5-month-old 2 TB, USB 3.0 external drive suddenly stopped powering up the other day trapping some 300 GB of my music collection along with nearly 500 GB of my movie collection, all my backups, downloads and a multitude of othe...

I'll have to get in touch with TWC to get the credentials to log into the router. This was not an issue before the Internet service upgrade.

Re: No video on my HP laptop

I agree about Dells but a new one is out of my price range. I just got this little 2005 model Latitude D600 working with W7 ultimate. Plan to use it for Ubuntu or similar whenever we get another one for my wife. You did give me an idea, though, and I found a few used ones on eBay. A couple of them h...

Re: Routers routers rah rah rah

The network is very basic. Essentially a workgroup. Deb (Village Clerk) & Karen (Deputy Clerk & and my wife) have mapped drives to the server. Their PCs back up to the server then to Amazon Web Svcs. Karen has a mapped drive to the 3rd client which is used by the CPA. Deb & Karen share t...

Re: No video on my HP laptop

They have nothing for when the LED just blinks once every couple seconds and continues. It never stops. I stopped counting the blinks at 25. Best I can tell from research is video is shot. Like I said, health problems prohibit me from trying the reflow fix. I'd probably screw up something else in th...

Re: Routers routers rah rah rah

Sorry for the confusion. I know I've probably got you guys talking to yourselves. There is no malware. I just completed a 4-month maintenance on the client PCs a couple of weeks ago. That involves complete anti-virus, malware, junk files, registry scans, etc., plus physical cleaning, e.g. blowing ou...
