Re: Building a storage PC

Ouch i meant of course 3 disks. i.e. 3 will be storage, and 3 will be redundant at 1:1. So the computer will be connected to the network, the students will have access to say disks d,e,f and at night I will back up incrementally to g,h,i. I know it's patchwork. You seem to be comfortable with RAID. ...

Re: Building a storage PC

UPDATE After reading extensively on all the info here (thx guys), I came up with a modified idea. 1. I still don't want a local NAS, rather a full PC with lots of HDDs. I did look into it and the NASs I would be able to purchase within the confines of our institution are too expensive. However, the...

Re: Building a storage PC

I actually WANTED to run RAID 6. While I am decently technically proficient at hardware(I built 3 systems already, but none with RAID) I am not an expert. According to the mobo manual, it only has 1,5, 10. But now I am further confused, after what Knight said about not being dependent on the mobo fo...

Re: Building a storage PC

Thanks for the replies. 1. I already intended to use the Red disks. 2. Wow. I always assumed RAID 5 is still standard. After your links, I started reading up and there is lots of hate against 5. So i am now thinking of RAID 10. This will certainly cost us space though. So, lets say i go RAID10. Afte...

Building a storage PC

EDIT: Please see post below that says UPDATE for updated idea! I am trying to plan a data storage PC for my lab. Of course I would prefer to buy a PowerVault type of server, but atm we cannot afford that. And we need more storage. So I was thinking of building a full tower PC, with something like 6...

Upgrade with USB 3.0 card

We have a computer that runs a $150k microscope. As we always have a data storage issue, I want to upgrade the computer with a USB 3.0 card and store data on external disks. Other than making sure I have a spare PCI slot (or PCIe?)(not trivial as their are a lot of cards in there - I cannot check it...

Re: upgrade project - not quite working, help please

Hmm, i well I could put in a bit more. I guess I would need a newer mobo, right? Well considering I already bought the chip, and the bought RAM, have CD drive (non SATA), PSU and case, what cheap, simple mono should I get? My main comp is a core i7 I built in Jan (I love it) this will be for my kids...

upgrade project - not quite working, help please

hey all. I am trying to upgrade an old computer and you know how it is - like the story of 'I have my grandfathers ax - my father replaced the handle and I put on a new blade'. I did a comedy of errors, please do not poke fun, I already berated myself enough... OK here we go: My old comp died (the H...

Re: Keeps on failing - after I changed mobo

darn lol I already took the CPU off and cleaned it up. Isn't it enough that it stayed on with no CPU and all 3 mem sticks?

Re: Keeps on failing - after I changed mobo

It's not even reaching BIOS to do anything - it essentially wont turn on. I tried your advice, turnsoutitwas: I first connected the mobo, gfx card and mem (did all three sticks though, not only one) , OUTSIDE the case, and turned it on. (On a wooden board with my wrist on a static cord connected to ...

Re: UPDATE

HELLLP! I replaced the mobo under RMA. Still does not work, so it was not the mobo. :( This is what happens: I connect the PSU and the onboard power button lights up. I hit the 'on' button and I get about a half second startup - the CPU fan spins a couple revs and then the whole thing turns off and ...

Re: Catastrophic failure ***Pics Added***

Thanks for the input, but that could not have been, as the stand offs in the P182 are pre-instaled and they matched perfectly to the 9 holes of the P6T. I am sending it back to Newegg, hope I get new one :)

Re: Catastrophic failure ***Pics Added***

back looks ok.

i got it from newegg, so I can use their RMA system, no?

EDIT:

Hmm I wonder now what's better? I checked up that site and my board does qualify. They (Asus) DO offer a cross shipping, while EGG does not.

Re: Catastrophic failure :(

OK all thanks so far for the answers. I was unable to deal with it past 24h (family stuff..) I will take it apart tonight and let you know where I think I smell anything. My build: Core i7 920 CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V (Would never have thought thats the problem) ASUS P6T Deluxe LGA 1366 Intel...

Keeps on failing - after I changed mobo

~~~Please see updated post bellow~~~ Not sure where to post this. I recently built my first build, after a LOT of reading. I am very good mechanically and technicaly. I made an i7, P6T, 6GB corsair, 4850, TX750W + a Monsoon III cooler. I KNOW I built it right, I did it very slowly. Everything was c...
Re: ASUS P6T Deluxe & SAS
Hmm. Well I might simply return the SAS drive now. It's too small for data, and a waste, if not used for OS. Still, it should run Vista 64 faster than a regular drive on the intel, no? I guess my question is, once it DOES boot up Vista (slower), do you feel running Vista off the SAS is noticeably fa...
Re: ASUS P6T Deluxe & SAS
Lucky I read this BEFORE I assembled my system! First post here, nice forum. I have a 74gig 15k SAS (was intended for OS on the marvel, like others here were going to do), 2x 320gig SATA drives I wanted to use for data in RAID1. And a 500GB for eSATA backup (kept offsite). Not sure how to set them u...
