Re: i5-2500 or i5-2500s?
After looking at performance tests, I decided to get the i5-2500K anyway. That way if I ever luck across a good used z77 board I can play with OC'ing it on that, but otherwise should give me good performance in the H61 chipset HP PC as a general rig. I think I got pretty lucky and was actually brows...

Re: i5-2500 or i5-2500s?
Yeah, not looking to OC or I would get a mobo that does so, this is just going to be a general purpose that I share with my wife. Since it is a complete PC with Win7 COA I thought it would be a good candidate for that. It currently has an i3-2100 that is actually pretty snappy with the SSD I put in,...

i5-2500 or i5-2500s?
I have an HP PC that shows compatibility with skt 1155 cpus up to and including i5-2500/i5-2500s/i5-2500t/i7-2600/i7-2600s. I see that the S series cpus have lower clock at idle but go up to 3.7ghz for the i5-2500s to 3.8ghz for the i7-2600s under load? Would it be worth it to go for an s series for...

Re: Dual boot standalone O/S's
Update: I just found an extra step in the F12 process for my mobo, I had thought it would only let me change general boot order but I've found that it will also let me change hard drive preference in the F12 command for a one time boot without having to go all the way into the bios, and still keep t...

Re: Dual boot standalone O/S's
i used grub2win so you could try that and my usb stick at the time was ntfs format and it looks for ntfs to boot to/from ;) How did you install it as a standalone on your usb stick? From what I read, it wants to install to the C Drive so AFAIK it will modify the boot sector of at least the default ...

Re: Dual boot standalone O/S's
thanks, I'd been playing around with rufus all night last night, trying to make something happen with GAG 4.11 too but can't get the hang of it. This is frustrating but fun at the same time, I know I will get great satisfaction if I figure this one out. The major obstacle is that they all want to wr...

Re: Dual boot standalone O/S's
I doesn't appear that Grub will work for my intended purpose since it wants to install to a C drive. I want something that works more as as a "portable" extension of the bios (boot to SD Card, command information on SD card points to which physical hard drive I choose which then uses that ...

Re: Dual boot standalone O/S's
Makes my life simpler since I have to share this PC with my wife, and she refuses to learn anything, lol. What I want to accomplish is to have it boot to SD Card slot first as default so if the card is not in the slot it goes to next in line which would be the Win7 drive. When I want to get on and s...

Re: Dual boot standalone O/S's
I thought grub was just for Linux distros, I guess I'll do some research on that. Most of the proggies that I've seen while googling talk about being able to make a bootable flash drive, but on further reading it is just so an O/S can be installed to it. All I want to do is have the bootloader/files...

Dual boot standalone O/S's
I have Win 7 and Win 8 on the same PC in standalone configs (Each has its own boot loader so I currently have to go into bios and change the boot order of the physical hard drives every time I want to switch between O/S's). Would it be possible to create a custom bootloader on an SD card that the bi...

Re: Portable Media Players...ARRRRGH!
Yeah, it looks like the Galaxy S4 is what she wants, I've had my eye out looking for one of those for a reasonable price. She is a small person with small hands so a compact phone is the way she wants to go. She likes Android and playing with the apps, so a plain media player doesn't cut it. From wh...

Re: Upgrading a dinosaur
No, it was really just an opportunity to learn to take apart a laptop. I only had a couple of screws left over, and it boots and works as it should, so I consider it a success lol

Re: Upgrading a dinosaur
Been off this for a while, but have went back to it. It turns out that it needs a battery, the one in it only lasts a short while before it dies. I looked up batteries for it on newegg, and I found a few for sale. I am a little confused that while there are a few brands that list a battery for my mo...

Re: Portable Media Players...ARRRRGH!
She didn't want to wait any longer so I finally got her an Ipod Touch 6th Gen to try. She likes the size, but I HATE the requirements to set up Apple ID and provide private ID information. Even if I can find a program that allows file transfers from her laptop PC she still wouldn't be able to access...

Re: Upgrading a dinosaur
Update" T9300 is installed and running. It still doesn't like 2x2GB, so am using 2GB + 512MB. Temp sensors don't seem to be working anymore, even when running stability test in AIDA64. CPU temp locked at 27C, with CPU core 1 showing 43C and core 2 45C (which I would love if I knew it was accura...

Re: Upgrading a dinosaur
I did find mention from one person that 2GB x 2 would work, but most say that only 2GB +1GB would work. We'll see
