Win 7 rebooting
Hey guys,
I'm not sure if I missed anything while transferring my rig back into my case two nights ago. i took my time and checked everythign but you know how that is. Ill check again after posthing. Something is making my pc reboot while playing Crysis, and so far that game only.(GTA4 works fine, other ones I haven't tried yet). All I know is, in the log it's an Event ID 41, something to do with the Kernel-Power. I thought it was a loose plug but it only happens on Crysis right now. I know I'm not maxxing the PSU out. I'm hoping it's not going bad. hopefully it's nothing and just a wonky setting somewhere

Check the power connector to your video card.
Also make sure your video card fan is spinning properly.

Re: Win 7 rebooting
checked those and those are fine. It's didn't do it to Crysis oddly..but I just used Furmark and it went down twice. so..something is up. I can think of only three things. GPU, RAM or PSU. I don't have any spare ram so Im screwed on that for now. D@mmit.

does it do it in furmark v1.7.0 mode? (newer furmark has a glitch where any card will crash(GTX 260 and higher) randomly and at safe temps)InspectahACE wrote:checked those and those are fine. Re: Win 7 rebooting
Yea, it did it under 1.7.0 mode too. Prime ran perfect for 45 minutes so I think im ok on the CPU. ran Memtest but forgot it's best to run it on each stick not with all installed..so I'm gonna have to remove the V10 for a bit(that will be fun) in a little while..I guess then ill break out the PSU tester too.skier wrote:does it do it in furmark v1.7.0 mode? EDIT: just noticed you put wPrime lol..wasn't aware of that program. so ill try that too.

Re: Win 7 rebooting
Sounds like some sort of driver issue with your video cards. Running the latest betas and newest BIOS (if it wasn't shipped with it)?

Re: Win 7 rebooting
Apparently, Furmark can use GPU-Z for a reading on temps and power consumption(in amps it seems)..How reliable is that? Because if its reliable then I might have found my issue.

Re: Win 7 rebooting
well, running gpu-z with furmark it gives a "supposed" power consumption rating. it shows the amp usage going up to 95 ...and my PSU is rated for 80..but I'm seeing the same numbers for only one fermi(shown below) so I don't think it's too reliable now

Re: Win 7 rebooting
Try this, set your CPU back to stock clocks and re-run the test. With all the high end parts you have you might be pulling more than your beefy power supply can handle.

Re: Win 7 rebooting
Tried that and sadly it didn't help. it still crashes with both cards. What i found out so far, is that this is isolated to using more than one GPU because I can't get it to crash or shut down with just one GTX 480. the power supply supposedly is certified for dual 480's so unless it's going bad, it should be more than able to handle the load. I haven't tried out the 285's though. Those I know worked flawlessly on this PSU. Good thing I haven't sold those yetMajor_A wrote:Try this, set your CPU back to stock clocks and re-run the test. Now a thought came into mind. There's 3 pairs of pci-e cables for the power supply. one is permanently attached of course, and the other two are modular. The modular ones show which rails they run on . I don't know much about PSU's and don't know what rail the attached pci-e cable runs on. Does it even matter which ones are used?

Re: Win 7 rebooting
I don't think that it should. I might be off here but I believe the CPU/Mobo run on the 12V1 rail. Have you tried switching out the PCIe cables to the other rail or mixing and matching?
This could also be as simple as a BIOS update for your motherboard. Have you checked to see if there is an update for it?
A few months back my brother in laws computer would crash or lockup while playing a game. After trying everything I could think of I looked for a BIOS update and it fixed compatibility with newer video cards. Applied the update and all was right in the universe again.

Re: Win 7 rebooting
haven't switched them yet..but I'm going to in just a moment. I haven't thought of updating the bios but now that you mention it, I want to try that too. I read somewhere someone had an issue where a guy couldn't boot up his rig with his new video card until he updated the mobo bios.. I know there are updates from the one I'm running on now. so ill try that.
I appreciate the help so far guys. ..I'm off to update the bios and switch some cables. Will let ya know how it goes

Re: Win 7 rebooting
OK..I switched the cables around a bit. the Top GPU is now on the 12V2 rail. The bottom one now has one modular cable from 12V1 side, and the other other is the permanently attached pci-e cable(I lost the other modular pci-e cable) But it's working so far. I ran Furmark for 30 minutes even and it didn't shut down. I still want to know if I hooked these up wrong or what the proper way would have been if there is such a thing....so far so good right now though.

Re: Win 7 rebooting
Maybe you were pulling too many amps on one rail. Now that you have the load spread across 2 rails it isn't too much for the power supply to handle. Seems like the only logical conclusion to me.

Re: Win 7 rebooting
Agreed.
I need to learn a little more about power supplies. I'm still confused as to why this happened on a PSU certified for dual 480's. I'm just glad it works right now.

Re: Win 7 rebooting
Glad it's working good now. Did you update your BIOS or did the power supply fix that problem? I know that if there is a new BIOS that does nothing for me I'll skip it. I'm a firm believer in if it ain't broke don't fix it, especially with a BIOS update.

Re: Win 7 rebooting
Nah I left the bios alone. I didn't think the bios would be the issue, but I would have updated it if the cable switching didn't work, so it was a good idea nonetheless. I appreciate the help guys. I was starting to get upset because I was finishing up a review when this happened. I had everything but the edited pics backed up on the other pc lol. Thanks again guys, honest without ya'll I'd be a sitting duck.
