Quick domain question

Post by tekgek »

Hey all.
Sorry for the bad puncuation but I am typing this from my iPod touch
I have a quick question: can I host my own domain without paying if I host it on my own server?
Or do I have to use a registrar?

Thanks,
Tektek

you have to have a way for the name servers to know where to direct the URL, so you have to purchase a URL. You can direct the nameserver to your PC though and host it for free.

You have to buy/register the domain name somewhere, whether it's Go Daddy, Yahoo, Network Solutions, etc. But without a registered domain name you're not going to get anything resolving to a site except internally. Domains are cheap if they're unregistered. It's usually about $10 a year, with discounts if you pay for more years up front. I registered my domain through Yahoo Small Business.

okay, so ill keep the domain name charge, remove the hosting that I have, and point the domain name toward my server, after I install apache, perl, mysql, php, and all the other stuff that I will need.

Thanks for the help,
