POST Crashing?

Hi guys.
Got me a new PC and all seemed well but after it has done the POST it seems to crash. So I reboot and all is well.
Any ideas??

does it crash just before the log in screen appears as mine did that and it turnt out to be cpu fault. go into your bios and check your cpu is at the stock speed!

it could also be the cpu voltage is off a bit.

No it finishes the IDE detection and then seems to crash. All of the levels are factory as I don't like overclocking (too much risk and fiddling).

do you have any IDE controllers or even old IDE hard drive or cd/dvd drive if not disable IDE detection in your bios. that may stop your problems.

I do have an IDE disk drive which at the mo has a game inside nearly all the time. Could that cause the issue??

what happens if you unplug all the IDE and SATA devices except for the drive that the OS is installed on? See what that does... If it works start plugging in things one at a time until the system starts crashing. You can sometimes do this to isolate a bad device or one that isn't playing nice with the BIOS I/O tables.

Now might be a good time to check for any BIOS updates that need to be done and/or reset the BIOS to factory defaults as well.

Ok so development on this issue.

It stopped doing this all the time but still quite often.

But the other day I opened her up removed a stick of RAM, to see the spec of said RAM and then popped the it back in. So the RAM was out for about 30 seconds and, as always when I open the tower up, unplugged everything. Since then it hasn't "crashed" just loads up like it should.

My question is this.

Could RAM that is seated incorrectly still be used by the PC but cause small issues in the BIOS and POST??

Definitely
It can cause timing issues and have the clock skew be off.
When / if the ram is put under stress it can cause a crash.
I suspect windows is smart enough to notice this and in its dump report it logs the bad memory address's.
This is why it boots the second time as it ignore that address space. Server BIOS's & OS's have been doing this for years

I highly suggest you run a few passes of Memtest86+ to be on the safe side

Ok thank you but I am going to replace the RAM anyway fairly soon. So once I have done that, I shall do some memory tests.

Do the tests before! It might not be the ram, its unlikely but it can be the slots.
If you switch the them to alternate slots it might clear things up.
To run memtest it only takes time. It's simple to do and always worth having on a CD / USB key.

This is for CD

It takes ~10 mins per GB of ram to test, i suggest 5x passes (do it while having dinner etc)
In the old days you could just run tests 5 & 8 to find errors quickly, but things have proly changed in the last 3 years

You could also try increase the memory voltage by one notch (~0.1v)
This will cause no long term problems to the memory or other parts, but may fix it

Ok so intalled the new RAM and ran those tests and all is well. And the PC is considerably faster too.
