microsoft update error 0x80096001

I have tried every trick/repair in the book and no luck. everything i do fails
even avg won't update or scan due to the update error called general error. please i need help as my system is at risk.

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... 8465add239 Looks like you need to read carefully and uninstall AVG or something like that and reboot twice. I read that system restore helps.

tried this method 3 times now no luck. even used hijackthis, tweaked.com windows repair and registry fixes all to no avail

Uninstalling and cleaning out the registry from the .NET Framework files then installing them again has always worked for me. .NET 4.0 appears to be the required one now.

just did a complete re-install of vista 64bit and all is good. really was hoping to avoid this but had no other option left. good job i backed up all my game saves and other important info
