Gigabit Switch Died

Post by Major_A »

Well my D-Link switch bit the dust. Transferring between PCs at a max of 10 MB/s is outright torture (used to be 90 MB/s). Any suggestions for a new switch? Do I want Jumbo Frame support? Should I stick with a dumb switch or a managed one? Suggestions are more than welcome.

your not specifying exactly what you need

Number of ports ?
Qos feature ? (if you're gonna use it for sharing internet and your router doesn't support Qos then you need one if u hate some one sucking all your connection )
you wont ever need a managed switch

read this to know if you need jumbo frames ( most switches support 9k frames )

this is my choice for an 8 port switch

i recommend the D-link over the much loved netgear GS108 model because the Dlink offer more features for the same price

Choice for a 5 switch

the constructions for both of these are very solid thick metal casing

both of thm have life time warranty

One of the PCs is my "main" rig and the other connected is my HTPC. The rest of my network is wireless (boo for them). My old switch was a cheap D-Link 5 port switch. If they made a 3 port switch that would be all I need at the present. From what I gathered with Jumbo Frame support is that the burst speeds are faster with less CPU utilization. Is that a fair takeaway from the link? As far as QoS it seems like my router is setup to handle that aspect. Thanks for the links.

Will do. Thanks again for your help and suggestions. You didn't say anything, do you have any thoughts on that unit? It has good reviews on the Egg (taken with a grain of salt since everyone is an Eggspert) and it has a metal case with large ventilation holes.

Well after being lazy I installed it last night. I forgot how much nicer it is transferring files over a gigabit connection. Since there is no scale on Newegg's site I'd have to say it's about the same size as a portable 2.5 HDD but a little thicker.
