Try this... Do another reformat and after the install only install drivers. Next tell Vista that you want to manually install updates. Install all the updates that you see minus the .NET Framework packages. Then start installing updates 1 at a time to see which one is the culprit. I know it sounds like a PITA but at least you'll know how to avoid it in the future.

To make your life easier I'd also recommend slipstreaming SP2 into your Vista install.

There is a chapter or two about boot time decrease. But it also has a lot of other useful things too.
Doesn't go into exactly how to do things within Vista too much but gives you the gist.

If all else fails, as others have said move to Windows 7 or even Windows 8.

There is after all a reason that Windows 7 was released so quickly.

ok had a read everything on there and have already done it all :lol: somehow managed to get my boot time down to 2 mins 30 secs. so i'll stick with it for now :) thanks for your help
