Corsair GS800!

Post by DJ Tucker »

Hi everyone, i have the titled PSU however, i know that the psu fan doesn't spin up until either 40%+ load or 40c which ever hits first but my system using OCCT Power Supply hits 100% GPU usage, 100% CPU usage and 90% Memory usage. My GPU is at 78c, CPU 51c cores at 57c, Northbridge at 58c and Hard Drive at 28c. with ambient temp at 21c this morning. yet the fan doesn't even spin up but it used to do so before. i have tested the fan and it works fine so why does it not spin up anymore?

Sounds like it might have gone bad. Without voiding the warranty have you tried to manually spin the fan to feel for resistance? It's pretty noticeable when a bearing in a fan is bad. Is there an override to have it spin all the time?

The fan spins when i power on the system and stops due to low temp and/or load as it should. There isn't any resistance on the fan when manually trying to spin it so i know the fan is ok. Also no override to power the fan full. However, my warrenty is void as there should be a black void sticker over one of the screws and i haven't got one anywhere on the whole PSU? so none the less i took the PSU apart and plugged the fan into my molex using an adapter and the fan works (my god is this fan loud). so what confuses me is how at higher load and ambient temps is my PSU clearly reporting lower temps and power usage that stops the fan spinning?

Sorry I don't know. No PSU expert by any means so hopefully someone else has an idea.

just out of curiousity, how much wattage should my system use at full load as stated above?

Using a Kill-A-Watt P4460 on my computer I was pulling roughly 350W-375W at the wall. Keep in mind too that I'm 110V and it's not as efficient as 220V. If I had to ballpark your computer I would say max 400W-475W. The reason I say you are pulling more is the older CPU and the power hungry nVidia chipset/motherboard.

My PC:
i7 2600K @ 4GHz stock voltage
16GB DDR3 1600 @ stock voltage
GTX 570 @ stock voltage/clocks
Z68 motherboard
120GB Agility 3 SSD
2xWD 2TB Black 7200 RPM
20GB Intel 311 Cache SSD
X-Fi Titanium PCIe soundcard
Asetek sealed WC loop with 2x120MM fans
140MM top exhaust fan
2x120MM intake fans
Scythe 4 channel fan controller
LG Blu-Ray drive
Cooler Master Silent M 1000W PSU

Could not locate a case under "Noble Avenger" so I do not know if this is a case air flow issue or a power supply issue.
"New " design high efficiency power supplies are not meant to help cool internal case components, so it may be the power supply is not getting hot enough to trigger the fan.
Also possible case fans are less efficient. Could require oil or replacement.

Ok, so the fan works fine. For some reason even though my overall air temp inside the case is higher than it was in the winter (4c higher) the psu seem to be cooler i guess. anyway had to disable my side fans for it to heat up enough to get the fan spinning. so it seems my fan only works for heat and not load. weird but it works.

Most new PSU's don't need a fan... All the PSU's on the test bench and in my personal system are Corsair models and none spin unless they are hot and under heavy load. My AX1200 is always on as they figured anyone that would be buying a 1200W PSU will be putting it through some hell.
