Shakmods 24 pin extender voltage issues.

Post by DJ Tucker »

So as the title says, I have one of there 24 pin extenders. Been using it about 6 months and only noticed last week after having random shutdowns during gaming and even on YouTube. Found out that hwinfo was reporting +12v rail as 11-11.3v only when gpu was under load. if cpu was under load it would drop from 11.8v to 11.6v. I decided to disconnect the 24 pin and test with a DMM and got 11.8v at idle then tested it via a 4 pin Molex while system was under load and got the same results that hwinfo was giving me. Impressed with hwinfo +12v accuracy.

So I disconnected the 24 pin extender and suddenly my +12v was getting 12.05v idle and 11.7v load. Is it possible for a high-end 24 pin extender to cause such a drop in voltage that caused my system to shutdown, guessing due to low +12v?

I would say yes, since it happened to you

Maybe they have a faulty machine that makes them, maybe it is a bad connection inside one of the holders, maybe one of the wires is not up to spec (maybe all of them if they used cheap wire). Unless someone with knowledge of the connectors and electricity can take one apart and test every single thing, I don't know if it will ever be determined why or how.

you could test each wire to see if the connection is stable between ends. You could also test each wire with voltage running through them if you have a source to supply the clean 12v but be careful as with any electric devices, people do not want to see you get hurt! me, yes, but not you lol

I guess it would be hard but I checked online to see if anyone else has had similar issues to me and nothing, zip, nada. god damn it. shakmod wont even admit to it being an issue at there end as they quote "we only use quality components to insure that vdroop is minimalized". not so sure about that. No refund/exchange either. Had them less than a year and gave proof of order as ebay seller no longer around.
