Post by kappage »

Im looking at upgrading my beastie and seeings how i just got a job i can pay for it!
Ive currently got:
Pentium D 805
1 Gig DDr400
6600gt (maybe keeping)
Intel D101GGC

i was thinking of getting:
SLi motherboard one with good spacing between the card so i could possibly jsut use water cooling and i was thinking that i could jsut get another 6600gt 256mb PCIe.
Couple of gigs of DDR2 ram
and a Intel Core 2 duo E6420

if you have any suggestions please say Yay or Nae, but though if u do have suggestions try and keep teh parts that one of these stores (below) have.

i would consider instead of another 6600gt - sell the one you have now and get one 8800 320mb, the performance will be more than double of what the two 6600 in sli can do. and it will support DX10. the 6600 is already a outdated card no point in getting another one.

Get a E6600 rather than the E6420. Easier to OC and not much more expensive thanks to the price drop... WHICH NATE COULD HAVE TOLD ME ABOUT 4 DAYS SOONER!

If you're going to upgrade then you might as well build an entirely new rig. The pricing right now is good enough to allow for you to build something more cutting edge than simply changing out a few parts. You can't go wrong with the Core Duo family of processors, (see past LR reviews), however the mobo's are rather pricey, that is if things haven't changed in the past few weeks. If you upgrade your proc and mobo then you'll need to buy new memory and if you check out the Deals section of the forums you'll see where Apop posted a deal on some OCZ memory that is definitely priced right. Go with the 8800 video card as suggested by smack. Also, when building your new rig DO NOT forget the PSU and ensure that you put some thought and money into that. LR has done some excellent reviews in the past on some PSU's and I would start there to get an idea of what I need.
Don't ask me, cause I know nothing! I'm lost in this world of technology and am barely holding my head above water. Thank the Good Lord for LR, otherwise I would have drowned years ago.

Yeah, don't understand why you'd want to keep a 6600 card. It was a good card but it is sorely dated. Unless you have no plan to do any gaming?

I heard there will be a processor price drop soon, so you might want to wait a little while to see.

Man my 8800gts 320 runs beautifully, though i did get a name brand (XFX). No problem here with 1st gen jitters.
Only reason I can see to wait is $$$ and I doubt thats going to drop a whole lot in the near future. Besides, for what it is, its fairly cheap.

I guess there is the whole how will it preform at DX10 to be wary about, but even if its not great at first the drivers will get better for it.

Well after looking at the 8800 range at
http://www.nintek.com.au/x/scripts/prod ... egory=1550

then i saw the 8600 range
http://www.nintek.com.au/x/scripts/prod ... egory=1848

i read a few views on the 8600gts and they were saying that it could out perform almost all of the cards in the 7900 range, mainly i liked the price :) mainly cos im only some little bitch at the local super market im on $6.50 an hour :| :| . Anyways im not a heavy gamer the main game i play is Battlefield 1942!!! but mainly cos im good at it!!

The main thing that really worrys me about this computer is does it beat my friends hes running:
x1800XT 512mb
Pentium D 945 and 2 gigs of DDR2 640 i think.

The guy is very cocky about his pc its full of **** though, Just recently he was downloading Norbit and it was being Seeded by Paramount pictures they let him off this time with a warning. its funny though they went to all the trouble of using his Ip address to contact his ISP and to call him up after they knew that his ISP contacted him about it without fining him i say HA. And if he had of read the replys to the Torrent files he would of noticed that some one said in big bold letters DO NO DOWNLOAD

and if one of these cards can beat the whole 7900 range could any of these beat a X1800XT so do they?

Thanks for all the help guys! well i do suppose you get kicks out of spending some one elses money!!!!

i look at it this way Kappage, you spend about $260-$300 for a 8800GT 320mb. you got a nice card that will last you for years. then when that "killer new" game comes out and needs DX10 support next year. you are already ahead of the curve.. and yeah its better IMO than anything ATI has at the moment.
