Only four short months ago AMD launched the Radeon HD 3870 X2 graphics card and it was the flagship ATI Radeon product, but the successor has arrived. AMD has taken two of the latest cores (RV770)and placed them on a single PCB to create the Radeon HD 4870 X2 graphics card. AMD kept the clock frequencies the same as the Radeon HD 4870 graphics card, so basically you have the power of a pair of those running CrossFire on a single PCB!

The ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 graphics card looks like it is going to be a great graphics card and it performed better than we expected for this preview. Once AMD gets the drivers perfected, enables PowerPlay in the BIOS and does some other minor changes this card will hit the street and be the fastest card available for less money than a GeForce GTX 280 graphics card.

Great article. I'm glad to see competitive products from both companies lately. Better prices for us! :)

It's ironic that for ages I worried about the future of ATI and if it could stay in the game, but with the massive amounts of bad luck Nvidia are having lately, I'm beginning worrying about them now :P

Power play does not seem to work on Any 4870 product (be it Test card or not)

the 4870 X2 is realy doing well there priced at to match the 280gtx going to be an pain for Nvidia priceing (all thay need is to Fix the Folding side 1 8800gt = 3 48x0 cards folding)

I was just thinking that the power consumption on the 4870 crossfire was the same, and has powerplay been enabled on those yet.

Wonder how much they can bring the idle power down by.

with the 4000 cards parts of the core can be turnd off that are not in use (as why the 2 4870 in CF mode was useing 50W less then the X2 but the X2 is allso useing 1gb per core)

i was more talking about that an single 4870 on its own does not power down like an 4850 (sure it does not as other reviews have ponited that out) as i do not own an 4870 yet, i do not know, can you test it see if it goes down in power play in Overclocking part (not X2 as its Bios level but see if CF and none CF are disabling Power play, mite be an bios thing then CF is turnd on)

very interesting. Thanks for the numbers. I'm excited to see where this competition will take us. :) Yea for consumers! :supz:

Too bad for nVidia, looks like they got :ANAL: but I'm not worried about them coming back. It's always back and forth, this time the seesaw is tipped up for ATi.

Nice! I've been less then happy about NVIDIA's path as of late and it makes me all warm n fuzzy to see the matket heading in a better direction. It was pretty clear that left alone with no serious competition NVIDIA will try to take advantage of the consumer. Let the Price Wars begin!
