St. Louis LAN Gaming - Warfactory LAN 2008

Every weekend in numerous cities across the United States groups of gamers get together to share their love of video games at LAN parties. Legit Reviews is located in St. Louis, Missouri and we heard that a local group of gamers was having a LAN party this weekend and headed down to take a look at how things were looking. We also couldn't pass a chance of bringing some of the latest hardware to show off either, so we tossed together a quick system and loaded up the latest game titles to get in on the gaming action at the Warfactory LAN.

Image
"The Warfactory LAN had 51 computers in the BYOC during the seven hours that we were on hand on Saturday. This was a little smaller than we expected as past local events had 112 people in 2004 and 72 people in 2005, but Warfactory still had a strong sponsorship of the event..."

I used to LAN with Warfactory, actually helped the founders make the first set of network cables. The last time I went to a LAN I realized I no longer had the time to put into the games to be competitive. That and all that most wanted to play was Counter Strike, which I can not stand in the least bit to play anymore, and I just got plain old tired of hauling my rig around. This was before flat panels were affordable so I was still dragging a 19" CRT around.

+1 on the CS 1.6 and CSS stuff.

If there was a bigger diverity to the games played (RTS, other FPS, racing) then I'd get back into it, but it's all these people who do nothing but play CS anymore. Maybe I'm getting old. Is this what 30's gonna feel like? <ducks>

I used to hang with a small group who did LANs up in St. Charles in a church, that was the best. Played all kinds of stuff from old school Soldier of Fortune to the new stuff (at the time) like Far Cry.

I've thought about getting together a couple of board members here for a local LAN. Small, informal, a few beers and whatever anyone wanted to play. No fee's, no prizes, just some people BS'in, playing whatever THEY want, and relaxin. Heck, don't even care if we really got serious about any game as long as we had fun and got the chance to check out each others rigs and stuff.

***EDIT***

Just remembered one more reason I hated going to big LANs. Everything here started getting political. You had the War Factory people vs. the Lacledes LAN people and it was just to much childish drama. Plus you had clans getting in each others faces about "cheating" and stuff. Bah, to much BS for to little enjoyment.

Good discussion guys. This is Dave "killdashnine" Derington from Warfactory chiming in. It's good to see Bubba from the original crew and hello to the rest of you who've been gaming in the St. Louis scene over the years.

The LAN scene has changed in St. Louis. I started running events in 2002 via Warfactory and now in Late 2008 and still at it. While events have become more competitive, at the same time there's usually a lot of fun gaming going on. This last event aside we've done LANs at the Planetarium, the Bandwidth Exchange downtown, and even a bar.

If the Legit community is interested in doing something that is more your style just let me know ... I've got servers, and network for up to about 300 participants and, to be honest, would love to get back to some old school gaming. Most events I just make sure that everyone's happy and run the show, so being able to game for myself would be refreshing!

I'd be interested to see something like a BF2 game or perhaps a race game of some kind.

It seems the majority of the time the only people who show up to these events are the CS/CSS players for the tournaments. And that's cool, I understand thats where the money is. But for those of us who just come to play and hang out it's kinda frustrating to see everyone only playing one game, but with money on the line it makes sense.

We have the same problem at Archon. We need the revenue generated by all of the collectable card games, yet the die hard people you see there year after year have no interest in that. Gotta make your money where you can I suppose.

Computer gaming events can feature any kind of tournament that people demand, there only needs to be support from the community. The problems that we experience are pretty straightforward ... most gamers don't seem to want to commit to an event early (even if a discount is offered) and even more are resistant to the concept of a BYOC. Even worse, most teams don't seem to be able to stay together for more than a few months at a time.

I'm still optimistic though ... gaming isn't going anywhere and it's really useful for enthusiasts to network and support the community. Hence the
importance of the LAN Party. We'll be planning for another event for 2009, so stay tuned.

I've got 15 years of LAN parties under my belt and will likely continue to attempt to attend one a year if possible. Maybe we could get a Legit team together, lol

Yea i normally try to go to a lan that is over here called the 'Red Flag' i go with a couple of friend on of them pays the $25 entrance fee and goes just to leech stuff. Last time i was there they had more than 125TB's of software movies games etc... and dont forget the porn... THey also had a good program setup for gaming etc. The program they used for leeching stuff didnt jsut get it from one person you got it from two or three at a time so youd get speed of like 30-50 mb/s. All this was made possible because it is perth's only gigabit network lan. And at the time i went last time i did the stupid thing and went there with a 80gb hard drive... LAME! ](*,) ](*,)
