Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB Notebook Hard Drive

Seagate Momentus 7200.4 hard drives are the fourth generation of Seagate’s and are said to be one of the fastest notebook hard drives on the market. Read on to see how the Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB hard drive (ST9500420AS) does against eight other 2.5" drives to see how fast it really is.

The Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB notebook hard drive proved to be overall faster than the Seagate Momentus 7200.3 320GB hard drive, although the benchmark results were interesting. It seems that the Momentus 7200.4 500GB has without a doubt improved read scores, but the write scores seemed decreased in some benchmarks. The Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB hard drive was shipped to LR and tested using firmware 0002SDM1, which is said to be much better than the older firmware versions that shipped with the 7200.4 drives in March/April 2009.

Btw, what the heck is that pulldown menu for to the left of the file length/size pulldown? Number of runs? Number of random locations on the disk to test? What for??? I can't find any documentation for the program.

It's the numbers of runs... Then the utility takes the highest score of the five runs and publishes that when it is finished. I wish it took the average of five runs, but for a free utility it's pretty decent.

Thanks for the reply. I agree! Avg should be taken and possibly throw out the first if it's the lowest (drive warmup?).

It better not need a warmup lap!

Is there a chance for the drive consumption to be measured? I'd like to compare drives upon this parameter. Thank you.

For that I'd need an in-line SATA power cable tester and those machines are rather pricey the last time I looked years ago.
