Swiftech Apogee GTZ Core i7 Waterblock Review

Today we look at one of the most popular CPU waterblocks on the market today, the Swiftech Apogee GTZ Core i7. The Apogee GTZ has been one of the top waterblocks for some time, so let's see how it handles out Intel Core i7 920 on our LGA 1366 test system!

In all I’m rather impressed with the Apogee GTZ Core i7 CPU water block. Combined with the rest of the cooling system this is the coolest the test bench has run when overclocked or otherwise. Granted, the cost of the overall cooling loop is almost double the cost of the Cooler Master V10, but it is actually quieter.

Thanks. Is this the best i7 water block?

Is it just me, but the pictures on page two of the suggested installation don't match how you installed it. The inlet should be on the side of the lever, but you put it on the opposite side. Am I seeing this wrong?

the orientation should be 90* to the lever arm, the inllustration covers both 775 and 1366 sockets.


Some 1366 sockets run left/right, arm on top. Some run top/bottom, arm on right. Either way its always parallel to the RAM slots. The DX58SO runs left/right, arm is on the top. On an 775 socket that runs left/right its on the bottom. The illustration is from the 775 application, I got it off Swiftech's site. The packing for the GTZ i7 even shows a 775 socket in the install instructions.

The core of the GTZ and the GTZ i7 are the same after all. They just need to be centered on the socket the right way so the block gets the best contact patch to the CPU.

As for the best CPU block, I have seen tests where the GTZ i7 is beat out by the Heat Killer 3.0 by a 2-3 degrees, but at $85 its $35 more than price of the GTZ i7's on sale right now for $50.
