Thermalright Venomous X CPU Cooler Review

Today we will be looking at the newest cooler from Thermalright, the Venomous X. The Venomous X is the successor to the ever popular Ultra 120, also known as the TRUE; join us as we see how the new Venomous X fares on our Core i7 test system against the new Noctua NH-D14 and dozens of other CPU coolers that are on the market today.

Anyone familiar with the Thermalright Ultra 120 will see the Venomous X heritage right away. This is mainly due the fact that the design is pretty much the same with some subtle changes to the cooler itself. The most noticeable change is the profile of the cooling fins. The biggest change is in the new mounting base: more on that in a moment.

Very interesting. It looks like heatpipe technology is reaching its limits. At least using the traditional methods.

is there any way to attach one of the noctua 140mm fans to the venomous X? Would be curious to see if that evens out is performances with e nh-D14.

Also very interesting to see the big difference the extra pressure makes on temperature.

I tried. The mounting points of the Noctua fan combined with the shape I couldn't get a way to mount it, Noctua spring clips didn't fit the cooler and the Thermalright ones wouldn't clip into the holes due to fan bulge.

Even if you devise a way to mount the fan, it will stick way up due to the mounting bolt pushing it up.

Hmm, I think that a 140mm fan on this 120mm cooler would actually reduce the cooling performance compared to using a 120mm fan.

Well, I wonder how this would fare against Prolimatech's similar but bigger 140mm heatsink named: Prolimatech Armageddon (to be released shortly)?

By the way, great review, Shane.. I really liked how you compared 40lbs pressure against 70lbs!!
