Meh, not worth it IMO.

Would be a much better review if it compared it against other coolers and not just the reference cooler.

Well noted, but I'm trying to spread out some CPU coolers to some other staff members right now. Shane has done all the cooler reviews for the past couple years and we wanted to get some other writers in the mix. You have to start some place! Hope you understand this. Most people upgrade from a retail box cooler, so the review still has validity... just not the dozen other coolers to compare it against.

Well, it was pretty clear that it must have been another person that did the review because most the previous reviews have had other coolers compared against. It's unreasonable for the person doing the review to have to spend hundreds of dollars getting different coolers just so they can compare it against one new cooler, and i guess it makes sense that people upgrade from the reference cooler. I just think that what makes a review a review and not an advertisement is the comparison of other items, giving readers the knowledge they need to make the right buy. Since he was using the same processor as was the reviews for the other coolers, would it work to just take the results from those other reviews? Only major differences i see is the ambient temperatures and case used vs open testbed.

Actually no, different motherboards, even different bios versions, can use different calculations to come up with the internal CPU temperature reading. Just having the same CPU does not result in comparable temp data. And the ambient room temp has a big role on how much heat the heatsink can transfer to the open air. If it were possible to include the other results, we would have, but we couldn't in good conscience. Hope this explains it further and thanks for the concern!

plus one author used core temp and the other used real temp... You really can't compare those numbers at all.

different motherboards
different processors (same type, but processors are each unique due to leakage and core stepping)
different thermal compound
different thermal compound application
different ambient temperatures
different monitoring programs

This is a beautiful cooler.. it'd probably nicely complement my open case lying down flat. In an open case, the airflow direction wouldnt matter as much, and the heatpipes would be more efficient transferring the heat vertically. Great insight, Dan Stoltz, on the screws potentially coming loose.. I've never heard of the blue glue for the screws before and am interested in them for other stuff that need it badly!!

I just wonder if it will be any better than my Big Typhoon with a 2000rpm fan that i'm using right now on my Core i7 oc'ed to 3.7 GHz? I'm looking for something that will help it o/c to 4GHz like the one in my wife's rig that I coupled with an IFX-14 cooler.

But why didn't this vertical VT cooler have 6 true heatpipes instead of only 3?? The newer version has 6 heatpipes, but I prefer the vertical one for better looks and straighter heatpipes which are more efficient in themselves (especially in a case lying down flat like mine). At least thicker 8mm heatpipes would have been nice, if not the ideal solution for this design.
