Great pictures and explanations. Just a wonderful, unique article that makes me glad I frequent Legit Reviews!!! :drinkers:

This is the same notebook we showed the attendees of the LR/Intel: How to Build A Notebook workshop at QuakeCon 2005! I must say this notebook plays most the current 3D game titles without a hitch!

I was thinking about getting this Asus Z71V... but, i saw that the 6600 on it has very low gpu/memory clock. I was checking the Acer 8104, with X700.

What is the frequency for gpu/memory of this Asus barebone? Did you guys play some games with it?

Here are all the "tech specs" nVidia lists on the GeForce Go 6 series mobile GPU's:

Although I couldn't find much on clock speeds there :?

wow Nate, you really do push building a whitbox notebook; this is the fourth article on it, and it will become part of my instruction set that I'll print out and put to good use shortly after my desktop is built (hell, I need something for the college campus eh :) ); Imagine that though: a notebook that serves the primary purpose of a college notebook, yet has the performance of a high-end notebook so after you get done with the homework, you can use your campus's native wireless connection to frag people on BF2 or CS:S in good ol multiplayer mode. sounds like what I want right there, one thing though, what do the temps usually stay around with a notebook, because I've known the older ones to get pretty warm (PIII-M's, XP Mobile, etc)? Good work Nate  :drinkers:

Awesome article!

I am getting ready to build one myself, but would like to see some benchmarks. It has been said it can play games, but at what FPS???

Any benchmarks?

Really what I want to know is how good can this thing run BF2???

Wurd.

plays BF2.. I didn't benchmark that one, but I have an overclocking article that will feature some gaming benchmarks coming up shortly.

Sweet, would be greatly appreciated !

I have been reading on other forums, specifically - http://www.laptopvideo2go.com and there have been a lot of people saying that they are having serious issues with the 6600... either way I do realize there are a lot of people that don't know how to properly setup their system...

Anyways that article would be great.. I am looking to buy in the next couple days and would be more than willing to take pics of the system and run any and all benchmarks and submit on your site.. I just want to make sure this is the way to go..

I really dig the balance of weight/cost/performance/features of this sytem..

Thanks!

default the video card runs at 250/500 and I'm getting over 300/700 without issues. I can run it up to 340/750 but it is not stable.

Apoptosis,

Thanks for the reply.

The main issue seems to be with drivers problems... A lot of people are saying that they can't run BF2 or CS because of technical issues...

Do you happen to have that article?

Any thoughts on the compitability with this card?

wow, thanks for that...I was contemplating building one to play BF2. Where did you hear/see that.

I've seen that on other forums, but not sure what drivers they were running, memory, or CPU. Running desktop drivers, 1GB of memory, and an Intel 770 Pentium M processor the ASUS Z71V runs just fine on BF2 and F.E.A.R. just at reduced resolutions.

Such a nice notebook, but i'm so torn between this notebook and the z70va. Any ideas on comparisons between the 2?

What's attracting me to the z71v:

-MXM Slot for graphics upgrades...z70va is NON upgradeable
-Geforce 6600 graphics

What's attracting me to the z70va versus the z71v:

-MUCH better casing (imho, plastic on the 71 looks cheap  )

Perhaps I should get both and transplant the boards :D
