G.Skill DDR3-1600 CL7 6GB PI Series DDR3 Memory Kit Review

G.Skill's PI Series is a performance oriented 6GB DDR3 triple-channel memory kit with a budget price. Sporting 7-8-7-24-2T timings at DDR3-1600 with only 1.5vdimm, this PI Series kit is quite the kit. Check out how this kit scales and see how we had previously reviewed this kit's unknown sibling.

A few weeks back we took a look at G.Skill's ECO series of DDR3 memory. The kit we reviewed, the G.Skill DDR3-1600C7 ECO Series, were binned for low voltage operation while running high frequencies and tight timings. Today's kit are the DDR3-1600C7 Pi Series with part number F3-12800CL7T-6GBPI and are part of the PI Series. Counter to the ECO series, the PI Series is marketed towards the other end of the spectrum with performance in mind.

Wow, pretty surprising at how marginal the performance increase was from overclocking the RAM. Hell at the max OC, it took a hit.

The more budget kits I play with the more I notice that there isn't much point to overclocking them unless you maintain the factory timings. Anytime you loosen them up you add more latency than the additional bandwidth can offset. This kit is a great example of that. Far better to use it at stock speeds with 1.4vdimm or lower, not overclocking it.
