OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G 120GB SSD Review

It wasn't that long ago we had a look at the beta OCZ Vertex 3 drives with the next generation SandForce controller on board and few competitors. Other World Computing (OWC) has stepped up with the Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G line of solid state drives featuring the SF-2200 controller and a 6Gbps interface. This will heat up the competition and we'll see if their top shelf parts put them over the top in terms of performance.

The OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G is exactly what we would expect from a SandForce SF-2200 drive - fast and reliable. However, there's stiff competition from both OCZ and Intel with others emerging as the year progresses so tweaks in their firmware may help differentiate them in the long run...

Been using OWC in my systems since Ocz burned me on support by saying the drive wasn't supported on Mac osx. And the best part these drives perform close to peak after months even without Trim because the controller overprovisions on the ssd

Matt, see my note in the article about enabling TRIM on MAC OS X...it works great!

Even after a year my performance hasn't diminished. I can wait for Lion to come out this summer with Trim support

Rumor is, it will be restricted to Apple OEM SSDs only. I hope not.

Owc is Mac certified and the ony manufacture that is allowed to sell ssds for the Air, so they should be supported

I don't think that will matter...only the drives Apple puts in will support TRIM. Again, this was what I read so how true it is remains to be seen.

Forget benchmarks as this drive may lag in some benchmarks but outperform in others. In real world use, this drive hauls but. I've used the Crucial C300, Vertex 3, and OWC 6G all on a Sata6 connection... and I couldn't tell much difference in their use (I used each one for a week to fully get used to each drive). In the end, I decided on the OWC drive for a simple reason... *** FIVE YEAR WARRANTY ***
