The 12V auxiliary port in my car went bad and I was having to use Google Maps for a job a while back. Only option I found that was viable was something similar. It isn't as elegant as this design but it gets the job done.

I do pretty good with my S3. I found that the dam screen is the biggest issue with power, but can get 12-13 hours before having to plug in. Never would have got that with my old Tbolt and its stock battery. Can really stretch it if I disable the LTE radio.

Running the turn by turn with the GPS on really heats up the phone and sucks the juice from the battery, so I just make sure I have it hooked to the car charger.
